TfSI SHEEP TAX LAW
Attorney General Crawford is of the
opinion that the law imposing a tax of
twenty cents per head on all sheep
brought into the state for grazing pur
poses is constitutional. The law wilf be
tested in an appeal from Umatilla countv,
Oregon, at the request of sheepmen and
the case will be heard at the May term
of the supreme court.
The construction placed on the law by
Attorney General Crawford is that it is
a license and not a direct tax and there
fore not in conflict with the stare consti
tution. Whether this contention will hold
gocd, of course, remains to be seen. The
Dalles Chronicle.
Wednesday night of this week the city
council will consider the question of pro
viding an occupation tax. The mayor in
a recent published statement suggested
that if. the business men do not approve
of this manner of raising revenue, they
have the right to file remonstrance.
This is the proper way to ascertain their
wishes regarding the matter.
The two Senators from Wisconsin,
Spooner and La Follette, though both
Republican,- are at swords' points on
most issues. Spooner is a conservative,
La Follette on many issues a radical.
They are one on the protective tariff,
however. .

A careful glance over the list of names
of the contributors towards the relief of
the San Francisco sufferer, will be suffi
cient evidence to show why the business
men of this city should not be subjected
to an occupation tax. In addition to their
regular property tax they are continually
called upon for subscriptons towards
public and private enterprises. An occu
pation tax would only add another item of
expense. If the city needs more money
and there is no other way to secure it,
let it raise the rate of taxation. Then all
of the property will pay it proportionately.
