Tangiers May 1 A great fire in
this morning, practically destroyed
Attarin quarter. The damage is enor
mous, but no estimate of the loss has
been made. After the fire the looters and
soldiers engaged in a battle in which many
were wounded. The soldiers finally
overpowered the loot seekers and the
burned disrticts were then looted by the
successful soldiers.

half a mile south of New Era. Frank Smith

The bandit was flushed by blood, hounds

by Brager when they ran upon trie log
behind which the bandit was in hiding.
They stood hesitatinly for a few seconds
baying loudly and sniffing the air. Grab
er, who chanced to be ready with his gun,
looked under the log and saw a man
crouched in the leaves. "Are you Smith?"
he asked, at the same time covering him
with his six shooter, "I am." replied the
desperado and reached for his own gun.
"Then throw up your hands" yelled Grab
er and pressed the . weapon against the
murderer' temple.
Without giving Smith an opportunity to
get the drop on him, he pulled the'trigger
and the feuilet pissed through the bandit's
brains. He livad for half an hour but
never regained consciousness, and died
without speaking a word after acknow
ledging his ;dint ty. .
The bcdy was taken from its hiding
place end remcved to New Era as soon
as a conveyance cuild be procured.
Hundreds of people lined the road to New
fearless bloodthirsty outlaw. The ki'ling
ie a climax of a most sensational chase
which lasted from early in the morning
until the time he was shot. He has been
surrounded Jrwthe thicket where he ulti
matlly lost his life, by a hundred or more
men. Three dozen sticks of dynamite
were set on fire and hurled into the brush
where the manhunters. knew he was hid
ing. Volley after volley of rifle shots
were sent into the brush and crowds
called upon him to come out and sur
render, but it was all unavailing.:. and he
steadfastly refused to give himself up.
Once he emerged from the thicket but on
seeing his pursuers, hastily returned to
his hiding place. When he was discov
ered he showed no signs of having been

ARMY UNABLE TO HANDLE MONEY

place relief measure in charge of the
regular army is meeting with opposition
by the Oakland officials of the committee
who say that the army officers are. un
familiar with the conditions and unable to
cope with the problem of.ciring for ths
large refugee colony. A bitter fight is in
progress, and much bad feeling is anticipated.

Paris. May 1 The anticipated trouble
with the laboring classes began early
this morning. Several skirmishes be
tween the strikers and the police occured
early in the day and twenty bicycle police
were fired upon by the mob but a return
fire scattered the rioters. In Belleville
Market the riot is continous: Printers
have taken the lead and have caused the
most trouble. Eighty-thousand tif
now joined the rioters and more ar join
ing the ranks..; Up to noon the police have
arrested S75 strikers. -

POLICE STONED
' Paris May 1 Another riot broke out
this afternoon near the Nue Vaubers
temple. The strikers stoned the dragoon
and police, seriously injuring ' Inspector
Nicholai. Mounted troops charged the
mob and the streets were cleared. A
barricade was erected this afternoon in
the Rue Condrier, but it was demolished
by troops, and the cavalry dispersed the
rabble. Many sqldiers were injured' in
each attempt to dislodge the rioters.
