If La Grande had any athletic leaders
with a little' ginger In them, the Eastern
Oregon High School Meet; which was to
have been held in Union, could be held in
La Grande. Pendleton and Baker City
.are both in the field for it and La Grande
would be an ideal spot as a compromise.
We are permitting the surplus waters
of the Grande Rondo, Catherine creek,
Ladd creek and other streams to go to
waste now, but it will be stored In time
and held until needed. Then Grande
Ronde valley will be a continuation" of
small holdings and prosperous happy
homes.

Not a few of the Democrats are sor
in the way the voters handed it to Tom
Johnson. Johnson made the best "record
for the collection of taxes and in turning
over the money, of any of his prede
cessors and his friends think that he was
entitled to the nomination and make no
hesitation in expressing their views along
these lines. His friends 'claim that the
saloon interests of the county caused his
defeat. , , ' .
