The body of Mrs. C. R. Pratt was ship
ped through here to Elgin this morning.
She went to a Portland hospital a week
ago to undergo an operation for cancer of
the breast, but the operation proved un
availing'. Mrs. Pratt has lived with her
husband and family in Wallowa county
for twenty four years and at the time of
her death was sixty years of age. Her
husband C. R. Pratt, four sons and a
daughter survive her.

The benefit entertainment given at the
high school last evening was a decided
success. The program was carried out
ae announced except that the Male quar
tette failed to appear. Miss Lillian
McCall had the leading number in a re
cital. Earl Kilpatrick made a hit with his
political speech. The greater part of the
address was in latin but enough American
was sprinkled in to keep the auoience
enformed sufficiently to know that the or
ation was principally about F. S. Ivannoe
and Attorney Slater. The speaker's
gestures would lead one to infer that all
the problems of state were being handled
in an able manner. Robert Eakin en
tertained so well with a piano aolo, that
an encoe was demanded. George Hansen
rilled hi number most satisfactorily and
had to respond with an encore. The
music by the four school teachers was an
important factor in the evening's enter
tainment. A dialogue between Clark and Kilpatric
concluded the program. The financial
side was very promising and the boys

Dear brother;
We are here, Emma and I, trying to
rest up from the earthquake. We were
lots more fortunate as w saved our
trunks, at least they are to be forwarded
soon, but I feel the need of them very
much, but I am thankful we escaped
wite our lives. Our building stood the
earthquake fine, lost some plaster and
the stone was damaged but went down in
the fire. I surely thought my last days
had cotij wiei I wis arouwi from a
deep sleep by the building swinging and
rocking in all directing with a . noise like
thunder, creak of building, falling plaster
and etc. 1 surely thought the building
would go down and thought I stood as
good a chance on' the bed as any place.
As soon as the worst of the motion was
over I jumped out of bed and carried
Emma down 4 flights of stairs and was j
the second one out. For once the Scribers
were swift. Needless to say I did not
have any clothes on and but for the kind
ness of a young man who went to his
room on the first floor and got a sweater
for Emma and gave me his coat, we
would have suffered from cold. Later 1
screwed up my courage and went up
and dressed, packed my trunk and brought
Emma's things down and dressed her
there. We did not get any breakfast and
about ten got an express wagon to haul
us and trunks to Miss Charles, a cousin
of Mae McClaines. Mae and her mother,
Mrs. Underwood, Margaret and little
Dolph were with me. We all went out
there and while w did not suffer for
anything as they had water in the house
and we had enough to eat of beans and
corn with sardines and canned stuff, but
no bread or crackers. From where w
were, we had a good view of the fire
The first night we couid not sleep for
fear of an earthquik eand the second, the
fire was so near. We did not know but
we would have to move at any minute.
Fortunately it was gotten under control
just three blocks from us and Friday we
got a man with an old sand wagon to
haul us to the ferry and we felt for home
arriving Sunday morning. Mother had
been terribly worried and was S3 relieved
when my telegram arrived about ten
minutes before I did. Trusting (very
thing is progressing favorably with you.
