MlfOD TO BLAME
Quite a number of people are disap-
nnintoH in Mm. furf Mint Hon N C Mc
Leod was not renominated for represen
tative, and that in view of his strenuous
work against the division of the count;'
during the last session, he should hav -been
returned.
The entire western portion of the county
thoroughly appreciates Mr. McLeod'
efforts and would have gladly returne.'
him to the legislature had he in the begin -ing
of the campaign, permitted his friends
to use his name, but he positively refused
to be a candidate under any condition
whatever and so announced himself time
after time. After two or three other
candidates had filed their petition Mr.
McLeod finally consented. Had he con
sented in the beginning, no La Grande
man would have thought of coming out
against him. As it is Mr. McLeod can
blame no one but himself.
EQUAL SUFFRAGE PROGRESS
Forty miles to the westward the people
are to vote in June on an amendment
admitting the women of our bordering
state to the ballot. Western people have
always kept ahead of older communities
on such' subject, and Oregon should
demonstrate in the forthcoming election
that it can be relied upon to maintain the
reputation that has been won by the
west for progressiveness on all such
issues. Oregon men should admit the
women of the state to an equality with
themselves when the opportunity is pre
sented at the polls two months hence,
thus doing justice to the sex and affording
such additional encouragement to those
who are struggling to bring eastern states
to full recognition of the principles in
volved. Statesman, Boise, Idaho.
RtfORM THE ORDER OF THE DAY
The elections show conclusively that
the reform sentiment is gaining ground
rapidly in this state. Reform Sheriff
Brown carries Baker county over Johns
for governor. Reform Sheriff Tom Ward
secures a tremendous vote in Portland
after a most bitter fight put up against
him. . Reform Sheriff Smutt, of Morro
was renominated for the third time, and
thus it is over the entire state where the
issue was drawn. It might be well to
state in connection with the above that
things are tending towards the necessity
of another reform wave in this city. It is
to be hoped that a word to the wise may
be sufficient.
By those who are anxious to see the
primary election abolished it is often con
tended that no one but a rich man can
expect to be nominated under this system,
They forget that Mr. Furnish is credited
with (pendirg a much larger sum to se
cure the nomination four years ago. than
all of the Republican nominees put to
gether this' year and it is also a well
known fact that under a primary law Mr.
Furnish could never been nominated.
There is no question but what it was
the Intention of not a few voters to give
Mr. Geer the nomination with the idea
that Governor Chamberlain could easily
defeat him. Had Geer been nominated
he would have been elected, however w
will admit that Mr. Withycombe will
receive several thousand more votes than
would have been cast for Mr. Geer.
Is the primary election a success?
When were there ever one thousand two
hundred Republican voters out to a pri
mary election before In Union county?
That tells the whole story.
