An ideal day for election and the indi
cations are that a large vote will bt
polled throughout the state.
Prosperous Union county should eenc
the California sufferers a car load of pro
visions. Think of it 200,000 homelest
people.
The battle of the ballots is taking place
today. Tomorrow evening's Observer
will give you the result of the vote in thi
state and the county in detail.
Old Oregon is not so bad a state tc
live in after all. Many of our people whe
hava wished their lot had been cast In
California, will now rejoice that it was
otherwise.
Will San Francisco rebuild and once
more become the metropolis of the Pacific
coast? Is the question of the hour. If
the history of other cities which have
suffered great disasters repeats itself
San Francisco will be rebuilt mightier
than ever. We hope she will be no ex-
tion to the rule.
HARD ON THE CHILDREN
What's the use of being a child nowa
days? One by one traditional rights and
priviledges have been taken away by
modern educational methods and scien
tific insight The carefree days of child
hood have become merely a myth read
about only in old fashioned books and
from the time when the wrinkled and red
faced baby opens its blinking eyes on the
world it faces a regime of rules and
regulations by the side of which' military
life becomes one of happy liberty.
The modern baby long ago became
accustomed to getting so much food so
many minutes apart, with no concessions
made for an unexpected spasm of hunger.
It has ceased to protect against being put
to sleep in a dark room on a certain stroke
of the clock without any soothing session
in mother's arms or even a comforting
lullaby, and when it is old enough it has
trotted off uncomplainingly to tho kinder
garten where it learns to cut daisy chains
according to scientific principles instead
of paper dolls according to its own
pleasure.
But the child has managed to hold onto
a few of the cherished traditions handed
down from bygone ages. Now, alas, the
tuberculosis bugaboo comes along and
takes the most of these with one fell
swoop. "Children, do not put your
fingers in your mouth and do not pick
your noise." says Dr. S. A. Knopf, assist
ant health commissioner of New York
who started the tuberculosis campaign
Milwaukee Sunday night with a lecture at
the Davidson theater.
Slates must not be spit upon, pencils
must not be wet in the mouth, fingers
must not be wet to turn the leaves of
books, pins and money must not be put in
the mouth and hands and faces must be
washed before each meal. Fruit must be
peeled or washed before eaten and apple
cores, candy, shewing gum. whistles or
bean blowers must not be swapped
Tough lines for the son of an old fash
ioned boy with an inherited tendency for
borrowed bites of apple or better still the
whole core, for grimy hands and for
naturalistic and economic methods of
eracing pencil sketches of the teacher.
The tuberculosis campaign is all right but
it is putting a pretty big burden on the
children. There is but one compensation
to be found. The new rules instruct the
child not to kiss anybody on the mouth
and not to permit any one to do so to
him. This will be joyous tidings to ths
boy with a lot of affectionate feminine
relatives.
