Today is a memorable day in th
history of this country. Just 131 years
ago th. shot wasi fired at Lexington.
....... iimiu aiuuiki me world,"
and just forty-five years ago today Balti
more was the scene of an important event
in th. history of th. United States, the
attack -upon th. Sixth Massachusetts
regiment as it was on its way to Wash
ington in defense of th. Union. There
ar. still quit, a number of persons living
today who remember that April 1 9th
nearly half a century ago.
Th. country was In a turmoil then.
Fort Sumter had been fired upon, the
federal government had called for volun
teers to put down th. rebellion and th.
stars and bar. had been run up to replace
the star, and stripes in many of th.
Southern states. Baltimore was a hotbed
of secessionists then and when th.
Washington authorities attempted to pass
Armed men through th. city, there was
trouble.
On tha morning of April 19th, th. 6th.
Massachusetts Regiment and portion, of
the First and Second Regiment, of Penn
sylvania troops started across th. city.
They were greeted with hoot and jeer
and shower of missiles were hurled at
them by th. imm.ns. throng of southern
sympathizer. A soldier' gun was acci
dentally discharged, th mob mad an
assault and the soldiers fired a volley.
Four soldier and twelv citizen war.
killed and thirty-six soldiers and a great
rnany citizen wounded, '
Th. California horror has affected, the
entire nation. Oregon .specially feels
th. great calamity that has befallen th
metropolis of th Pacific coast. Thou
sands of our people have relatives and
friends or have personal acquaintances
visiting San Francisco, which brings it
closer home. Yet we can not realize the
awfulness of the situation. Thousands
ar. known to be dead and ' doubtless
there ar. scores and scores who will
never b. heard of again. Hundreds of
happy homes were shattered in the
twinkling of an eye. Men who were rich
yesterday are today paupers. It is the
greatest calamity that has ever visited
any section of the United States.
Th earthquake which did considerable
damage in California in 1892 covered a
period of several days and it will be quite
awhile before tha people will recover
from the resent shock, provided th. worst
is now over.
Tomorrow is primary day and each
voter should go to the poles and register
a choice for his party candidates. Good
men cannot be placed in office at .lection
time unless w see to it that only good
citizens ar. placed in nomination th. 20th.
No accounting for what man will do.
For keeping the Ten Commandment, a
New York man was arrested. They
were on a stone tablet, which he stole
from a synagogue.
A United States senator is credited
with the remark that affair ar so bad
that when th roll I called he dosn'i
know whether to say "present" or "not
guilty." Th Washington Post think it
is hard to see how he could plead "not
guilty" if present.
Earthquake newa eeema to have taksn
precedence over the primary election.
