Ona of the moat gratifying evidences
of the prosperous condition of the people
of the Pacific northwest the states of
Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana
is in the ownership of their homes and
comparative freedom from debt
Figures which have been compiled from
reliable sources In regard to this territory
show that only 18 per cent of the homes
art mortgaged. Compare this with many
of the older states. In Ohio, for Instance,
mortgages cover 81 per cent of the
homes; in Indiana, S3 per cent; in Pen
nsylvania. 33 per cent; in Illinois, 35 per
cent; in Missouri, 86 per cent; in Ne
braska, 36 percent; in Wisconsin, 88 per
cent; in Iowa, 89 per cent; in Michigan,
39 percent; in New York, 44 per cent;
in Massachusetts. 46 oer cent.
The farther east one goes, it seems,
the greater the proportionate indebeted
ness. Added to this is the fact that in
the east the farms have been so continu
ously worked for many years that the
soil needs constant stimulation with arti
ficial fertilizers, entailing large expense.
Similar conditions are gradually becoming
more and more apparent in the middle
west While in this country the soil is
fruitful to a degree that excites the
wonder of all that behold it. Hence the
great migration that is taking place from
the east to the west
Men learn that with a small portion of
the proceeds of the sales of extensive
farms in the east farms so large that
the burden of cultivating them is a
serious matter they can buy small tracts
here from which they can get larger and
better returns and have money in the
bank, instead of pursuing a hand to mouth
existence.
The freedom from mortgage indebted
ness so noticeable in the Pacific north
west can not be looked upon in any other
light than as demonstrating that those
who have made their homes here are
year by year adding to their store of
wealth and enjoying a measure of pros
perity not equaled in any other quarter of
the country. Spokesman Review
The campaign is practically over and
the public can congratulate itself that the
candidates one and all have conducted
creditable and clean policies. There has
been no mud slinging in this county. All
the candidates have been active, but
while trying, to assist their own interests
they have not exhibited the fancied or
otherwise faults of their opponents. In
this particular the new primary law has
been a decided success. ,
Remember the voting hours for the
primaries are from I o'clock until 7 of
the afternoon. It will require close atten
tion on the part of the voters in the larger
precincts or some will be left out By
another election the voting hours will be
extended, but from 1 to 7 is the law this
time.
(t is too bad that all of the candidates
can not be successful. They are all
charming fellows to meet However they
must prove themselves to be good loosers
s well as winners, as most of them will
have to smile and wish their successful
opponent success.
A man who does not vote in the pri
maries is derelict in his duty as a citizen.
