It is regarded a highly probable that a Republican State Convention will be held in Portland the latter part of April or th for part of May. PRACTICAL WORK FOR SOLDIERS The War Department Is much gratified to observe th keen interest which is taken in the instructions originating with the President for practical work of soldier in th field. It was expected that the idea would meet more or less criti cism, and that . the officers and men would not be especially desirous of going out into the field on long marches. Much work is entailed on the officers in charge of transportation and subsistence, but everybody takes hold of the ideas with great enthusiasm, from all accounts, and it is evident that practical result of a lasting nature will be derived from the weekly short marches and the monthly longer "hikes" with the three days camps. As an instance of : the new dis pensation, one of the features of the plans for the mobiliiation of the entire army in the United States at seven posts in the coming summer is a march of a portion of the second batallion of engineers from Washington Barracks to Plattsburg Bar racks, on the banks of Lake Champlain The troop will carry their full kits and will adopt the system of regular field pro visioning. To that end, commissary officers are preparing to issue the neces sary equipment for the cooking of the food on the march. The weekly and monthly marches in the next three months will put the batallion in fin con dition for itslong tramp.
