The Lyle Tuesday' Musicals cave a
very enjoyable entertainment last evening
in their rooms at the Commercial Club.
The idea was distinctly colonial, and the
powdered hair and old time dresses cave
a very pleasing effect. Mrs. J. J. Carr
and Miss . Margaret Kirk had charge of
the recital, and deserve much praise for
its success.

The club rooms, which have just been
remodeled and to some extent, rafurn-
lsnec, reflect a great deal of credit on
the ladies of the musical and those of the
Neighborhood Club.
GIVES BIRTHDAY PARTY
A number of young people were enter
tained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom
Johnson last evening in honor of their eon
Lester e sixteenth birthday. Miss Mary
Pennington proved the most adept at
pining ties to an imaginary man, and won
the first prize, and Miss Maud Snodgrass
contented herself with a booby prize.
Refreshments wire served. Those

Jackson, Oenevive Christofferson. Mary
Pennington. Messer Herbert Ormond.

Leroy Lomax cf Baker City is in the
city today.
L. J. Jordan left this morning for En
terprise to be gone a few days.
Mrs. Geo. Ackles is reported to be quite
sick at her heme.
. F. S. Ivanhoe went to Elgin this
ing.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Halgarth of Elgin
came to LaGrande last evening. "
Jay V an Buren is in Elgin today, sett
ing up an automobile.
W. A.Grandeahl of Portland is making
a hurried trip through this city to Elgin
and return today.
O. E; Harper returned last night from
Wallowa county where he has been in
the interestof thecreimery business.
Cnas. T. McDaniel was elected mayor
of Wallowa city at the recent election.
Several citizens of Joseph are having
boats built for use on the lake this sum
mer. Two or three will have gasoline
launches.
The Tea which was to have been given

afternoon has been postponed until Tues
day, April 17.
It Is becoming quite fashionable in this
city to have the measles. However those
afflicted do not remain stylish any longer
than they are compelled to.
Owing to the Quarterly conference to
be held this evening Rev Meredith will not
preach at Island City tonight but will
postpone the meeting until next week,

Ezra Meeker with his ox team proceeded
on hit way over the old Oregon trail this
morning. The next monument will be es
tablished at the mouth of Ladd canyon
and the next will be at or near North
Powder.
Messers A. B. Galloway and Kenneth
O'Loane representing the wholesale paper
house of Blake McFall Co. of Portland
are in the city. This is Mr. O'Loane's
initial trip in this territory and Mr. Gallo
way is introducing him to the trade.

Ogden. Ut April 11 Tne sugar beet
crop here is seriously menaced. Rain
fell in torrents last night. In twenty
four houre an inch of rain covered this
section. The sugar beet crop which has
been flourishing will be completely ruined
if the terrific rains do not cease at once.
