Andrew D. White, sx-Prasident of
Cornell University, ex-Ambassador to
Germany scholar, publicist, humanita
riansaid wholesome words to the Cor
nsll students a few weeks ago on the
problem of "High Crime in tha United
States." The basis of his address was
tha fact that more murders art com
mitted every year in tht United States
than any othsr country. i
It it Mid that society has no right to j
put murderers to death. In my opinion
society must fall back on tha law of
self-preservation. It should cut through
and make war, In my opinion, for its life.
Life Imprisonment it not possible, because
there It no lift Imprisonment
In the next year 0,000 ptoplt will be
murdered. At I stand htre today I tall
you that 6.000 afe doomed to death with
all the cruelty of the criminal heart and
with no regard for home and families, and
two-thirds will be due to tha maudlin
sentiment sometimes called mercy.
I hav. no sympathy for the criminal.
My sympathy is for those who will be
murdered, for their families and for their
childrsn. '
Tnis sham humanitarianism has be
come a stench. The cry now is for right
eousness. Tha past generation has abol
ished human slavery. It is for the pre
sent to deal with the problems of the
future and among them this problem of
crime. Young men, like Jerome, like
Folk and Hughes, resolve never to be
ssrvants of criminals, but to do your bsst
to punish crime as it should be punished.

THE SOCIAL SWIM
The New Haven Register thinks that
tht growth, among women and in the
home, of the habit of playing garnet for
prizes or for money is one of the most
alarming features of our present social
phase. To crush out gambling, reform
must begin in the home. The Register
says:
"To be a member of a whist club hat
come to mean for a woman that she Is in
tha 'social swim', and any woman who
prefers to use her energies otherwise and
does not car a fig for whist, or to swim
that way, is put down as odd.
In such ways do fashions or fads die
tat and make men and woman their de
pendent creatures. Just now many
women are willing to become nervous
wrecks as a result of the dissipation,
nervous tention, and' excitement of
struggle at the whist table for a pretty
sachet bag or Jeweled hatpin.
For some good people from various
churches a prayer-meeting or Sunday
school has become tame and out of data.
The whist party is the thing. For ex
citement it will beat a church sewing'
circle or missionary meeting at every
game.
Just here is where the difficulty is found
in enforcing laws agginst gambling.
When representative good people in any
community are Indulging in the gaming
propensity it can hardly be expected that
puplic opinion will support powerfully the
efforts of civic authorities in suppressing
the vie.
