ie entered the United States this morn
ing, not in a private car because none
was available. When the train stopped
at the International bridge for inspection,
a crowd of newspaper men were met at
the door by attendants who would not
parmit them to come in close contact
with the 'Prophet" It is said that Dow
ie's strength has increased under the op-

Hon. John H. Aitkin Speaks Plainely
for
Change in Law Governing Stat
Deposit.

H. Aitkin arrived in Portland this week
from his Huntington home and will re
main her some weeks. He is president
of the Oregon Commercial Company, the
leading mercantile institution of Eastern
Oregon; presi-ient of the bank of Hunting
ton: has been three times mayor of his
city, and is a leading factor in the Indus.

naught but the kindliest expression when
referring to his five competitors.
In an interview in the Oregonian Mr
Aitkin placet himself decidedly upon
record as favoring an immediate change
of the law now governing the state
treasurer. At present the treasurer not
only draws his salary of $4500 per year,
but is also allowed to deposit the surplus
funds of the stat where he pleases and
to pocket the Interest on these huge de
posits. Mr. Aitkin in the Oregonian de
clares emphatically for a change ' in this
system so that a board, consisting of the
governor, secretary of state and treasur
er, shall decide where these deposits shall
be made and that the interest on these
shall revert to (he state and not to the
extra compensations of the official.
This it a radical innovation, along the
lines oi rue public intrenchnient. . t has
a ring of genuine sincerity and is making
Mr. Aitkin thousands of earnest friends
among all classes who hold faith to ' the
public higher than mere graft- His plat
form 1 simplicity itself. He merely tells
the people that if elected he wilr giv the
office a straight, honest, business admin
istration and that every person shall have
a square deal. "The office shall be con-
ducted in the interest of the whole people

will be filed within a few day. In th
portion of the tati his popularity is
growing rapidly every day and although
there are five aspirants for the . same
office in Portland and the .Willamette
valley it now seem certain that he will
lead the entire list.
