WALLA WALLA'S FIRST CAME .
The much talked of team from Wall
Walla went down in -defeat to Whitman
college last Wednetday in ita first game
of the season. Gregory the city team
twirler was put out of business in the
seventh with seven runs chalked to his
record. The score was 1 1 to 2 in favor
of the students. If such aggregation
of school boys can administer so decisive
a defeat. La Grande will have a fair
showing against the Walla Wallans next
month.

PLEASANT PARTY
A big carry-all loaded down with mem
bers! f the Oamen-krants rumbled over
the hills to May park last night where
the occupants took possession of the C.
S. Williams home and proceeded to enjoy
themselves. The object of the party was
on the surprise order but Mrs. Williams
refused to be surprised, having heard all
about it before the arrival of the would
be surprisers. Howsver the party suffer
ed nothing from this, and in fact it was a
decided advantage. The evening was
spent with much jollity and finally the
merry crowd satisfied their plate as well
as furnishing much amusement, by roast
marsh mellaws. .The finishing touches
to the refreshment program came with
the annoucement of "Hot cakes." and
maple syrup.
Those present were: Misses Gertrude
Mitchell, Alice McKinley. Marie Clark,
Ada Fowler, Emma Clark, Mertie Aldrich,
Allie Stephens, Jenette Clark, Zada
Haney, Mable Williams. Mr. and- Mrs.
J. H. Dupes, Mrs, S. D. Crowe. Messers.
Mr. Edwards, Mr. Masses. Mr. MacLen
on, Mr. J. R. Smith.
BRICK STRUCTURE STOPS RUNAWAY
The J..W. Whit delivery wagon, mad
a lively run down depot street last even
ing and cam to a sudden stop when it
hit the Arcade saloon corner. The team
had started near the Depot and on reach
ing the corner of Depot and 1 Jefferson
Avenue tried to turn down the avenue.
However, it failed to make the sharp
turn and ran on the side walk Saddling
the cornet of the Arcade saloon. Luck
ily the corner is of brick and strong
nough to withstand , .the tar
rible onset. The tongue of . the
vehicle snapped m two - otherwise there
was no damage don the wagon or team

The three dusky gypsies who were ar
rested and placed in jail yesterday - after
noon for doing palmistry stents, were re
leased late In the evening and their fines
remitted, on the proviso that they Start
eariy this morning, for another . location.
They have departed; 'tis well.

Tom Bells came over from Elgin last

visiting friends in La Grande this week.
A. E. Hicks of Pendleton, had business
in the city yesterday.
D. H. Steward, manager of Steward's
opera house is in Elgin today.
A. C. McKeen of Durkee had business

John Downey, the popular young Eiler
Piano man of Portland, is in the city.
Carl Stackland was over fromth Cov
yesterday and stated the outlook was
bright for a large fruit crop thie season.
' Miss Fannie Goodall is here from Port
land visiting her Grande Ronde ' valley
friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Stoddard are in Salt
Lake City attending the Mormon confer
ence ther.
" W. I. Dishman and Ex-Mayor Smith, of

evening.
M. L. Causey went to Imbler this
morning to look after his orchard hold

Julius Fisher has purchased the Jordan
residence property on the north side of
the tracks.
Mrs. Frank Tony, of Baker Citv. is in
La Grande thie week visiting her parents.

The I. O. O. F. Grande Lodoe of
will be held in Portland May 22d of this
year.
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Dickey, who have
been visiting their brother, J. W. Dickey,
took their departure this morning for the
Sound.
Dr. George O'Connor, a ohvsiciar. and
capitalist of La Grande, has been here
today on a brief visit. Pendleton East
Oregonian.
W. J. Lachner, of Baker Citv. candi
date before the Republican primaries for
congress from this district, is in La
Grande today.
Arthur Miller, a Drominent farmar
of Wallowa is in the citv this weak. Ha
goes from here to Walla Walla where he
will spend a few days visiting.
Mrs. C. L. Hazelwood. of Elcrin. is in
the city because of ill health. She spent
several weeks her and returned to her
horn only a short tim ago thinking she
was improved, only to find it necessary
to continue treatments.

Miss Evalyn Rohan, a teacher in the
city schools is sick and Miss Gertrude
Beiver is substituting her position.

today. Mr. Harry was formerly an
official of the American Federation of
Labor.
Grandma Palmer will celebrate her
ninety-second birthday tomorrow and
will be at the home of her daughter Mrs.
B. W. Giandy on Fourth Street, in the
afternoon and will be pleased to receive
all her friends who may call.
Mr. S. C. Goff of Elgin is in the city
today. Mr. Goff states that sura signs
of spring are appearing- around Elg'n.
Plowing starts Monday and some of the
saw mills are already in full bias):. Con
ditions were never better, during the six
teen years Mr. Goff has resided in the
vicinity of Elgin, for a ' more bounteous
crop and an era of general prosperity.
RESOLUTION OF CONDOLENCE
To the officers and Patriarchs of Star
Encampment No. 31 I. O. O. F., we, your
committee appointed to draft resolutions
of sympathy for Patriarch KelU on the
loss of his wife by death, beg to submit
the following:
Whereas the Angel of Death has en
tered the home of our fellow Herdsman,
Sylvester Keltz and taken therefrom his
beloved companion, and
Whereas, the loss to him is the greatest
that could be sustained by him in this
world, therefor be it
Resolved that w extend to our beloved
Patriarch Kelti our heartfelt sympathy in
this, his hour of severest trial and great-,
est bereavement, and be it further
Resolved, that a copy of these resolu
tions be spread upon the records of this
Encampment, and a copy sent to Patri
arch Keltz.
