TO THE REPUBLICAN VOTERS
OF UNION COUNTY
I hereby announce myself as
Candidate for the Republican nom
ination for Sheriff of Union County,
subject to the primary nominating
election to be held April 20th.
Cha's Huo.
Cheer up! the real hot weather is still
several days removed. Anyway some
thing may happen which will cause you to
take to the tall timber where there is
always plenty of shade for shady people.
The homeseekers are passing through
the city in train loads. Is Union county
doing anything to make these people
understand that we are on the map?
Better set up and notice things a little.
Now that a splendid arc light has been
placed over the fountain it would seem
tf'at the lantern of the design of Henry IV
time might be removed. The city should
also repair the broken cup. The cost
would be slight and improvement great.
Primary registrations close on the 1 0th.
There are over 200 voters in the La
Grande precincts who have not regis
tered, If they wait to be sworn in on
election day the time is so limited that
some may not get to vote. It requires so
much less time to go to the court house to
register than it does to secure six wit
nesses and And a notary public on pri
mary day. Register now.

JOHN E. HOUGH
Justice of the Peace
The political campaign is on. The
nominees have tiled ther petitions for
nominations. Every good man cannot
win but all have the opportunity of trying.
So far the campaign has been free from
mud slinging and it is hoped that it will
so continue. Every citizen has the right
and privilege to aspire for political posi
tions and it is now the duty of the voters
to select those whom they think are best
fitted for these positions.
The county court should work in con
junction with the commercial organiza
tions of the county and have prepared and
printed a pamphlet descriptive of the
resources of this county. Yesterday No.
5 carried 450 tourists. The people are
coming to the coast and we should take
some steps to let them Know that we are
on the map. Our county will show for
itself but so many do not know that there
is a Union county.
The c'.ty should weigh carefully the
question of an occupation tax which is to
be considered by the council next Monday
evening. As a rule an occupation tax is
only one of the last resorts to increase a
city's finances. While La Grande is
somewhat in debt we have valuable pro
perty to show for it. This tax naturally
falls upon the business men, who in
addition to the regular property tax are
called upon almost daily to subscribe for
this or that, either of a public or char
itable nature that far exceed anything
that any on realize unless they know
something of the demands that are put up
to businessmen.
