The Democrats have been .scouring
every nook in Wallowa and Union

The Portland Chamber of Commerce
has hit on a unique way of advertising
Oregon through the National Education
Association. The meeting of this associ
ation will be held in San Francisco . in
July, at which it is probable that from
10,000 to 20,000 educator from
throughout th Nation will be in San
Francisco. Unless something is done to
attract these people to Oregon many of
them may return without seeing this
stata. With this in view the Chamber of
Commerce has offered $5,000 in prizes
for the best written articles regarding
Oregon and its advantages, which will
be publ shed by members of the National
Association in newspapers of the Nation
oitsideof Oregon and Washington. A
espy of the newspaper having the article
will be furnished to the Chamber of
Commerce and a board of judges on
about the I st. of October will pass upon
the most meritorious articles. The first
prize is $1,000 and th smallest prize is
$10, there being 100 prizes in all. Here
is a chance for some of our educators
who ar in close touch with educators of
the East' to get them interested.
ADVERTISERS ATTENTION
Next Friday the Observer will issue
what it terms a "Candidates edition," and
which will contain a writeup of about
th voters of Union and Wallowa counties:
Every registered voter in the two coun
ties will receive a copy of this edition. In
all there will be 6,000 copies, 'which will
be an exceptionally fine advertising med
ium, Those interested will find it to their
advantage to call . at the office and talk
the matter over.

STUDY Of HISTORY
. The study of history leads young people
to become omnivorous readers, and event
ually to cherish the nobler deeds that
have made good men and women famous.
It inclines girlsto emulate th greatest
women in those higher virtues and graces
that exalt womanhood; and in devious
ways it leads boys to become chivalrous.
genteel and patriotic until they learn to
frown upon vicious criticisms and evil
tendencies that threaten the sanctity of
the home and the progress of good gov
ernment While history, therefore, en
riches the mind and helps to determine
the career of young people, a fair know
ledge of the subject is absolutely essen
tial to American citizenship with its
accumulating responsibilities. Conse
quently, I would deplore as a calamity
any effort to crowd out from our college
this vastly important subject with sub
stitutions that are magnified on account
of th commercialism they offar. - Let us
have mora history and as a result better
citizenship to strengthen American men
and women and fortify them in tft faith
they hold in our institutions at a time
when the oncoming tide is bringing from
very shore an increasing multitude of
foreigners, many of whom ar steeped
and dyed in th venom of dangerous
anarchism because they hav never
known how much history was necessary
to make th American Government,
