The pupils of Miss Harris's room held a
very animated debate after recess Friday
afternoon. The subject was, "Washington
and Lincoln, which was greater?" The
interest was excellent and the debaters
acquitted themselves nobly. Rev. Gibson
was present and made a few timely
remarks to the school at the close . of the
debate. Misses Clements and Howard
and Mr. Pickler, of the High School were

W, B. Sargent of the La Grande In
vestment company, is in Haines today
campaigning for the coming primaries.
Mr. Sargent is a candidate for county
judge on the Republican ticket.
Mrs. O. W. Blain, of Grand Rapids
Michigan is in the city the guest of her
cousin Mr. J. W. Dickey. In a few days
Mrs. Blain's husband will deliver a series

The commencement exercises will occur
within the week. May 21 to 28, school
closing on the 25th.
It is possible that our high school will
challenge Union for a track meet to be
held in La Grande.
An invitation has been received from
Whitman College to meet in Wajla Walla,
for a medley of contests. It is doubtful
if our high school will contest this year.

store, had broken loose and started on a
