In Vale yesterday between the hour of
9 in the .morning and 2 o'clock in the
afternoon the price of hay jumped from
$60 to $80 a ton. according to B. R.
Robinson, general bridge and timber in
spector for the Oregon Railway & Navi
gation company, who is in Baker City to
day on hi way from the interior to La
Qrande. The sheepmen and stockmen of
Malheur county are in dire distress, the
railroad man says, and at $80 a ton they
are unable to secure the hay which i
necessary to save the lives of their
ttock. ... -
Mr. Robinson was in Vale visiting his
uncle, George Vanderhoff. Mr. Vander
hoff, he say, ha about ten ton of hay
which he wa offered $70 a ton for y
terdaf noon but which price he was com
pelled to refuse a the fodder is necessary
for the use of hi own horses.. In all
parts of Uie county are people witn from
5000 to 4000 head of sheep and no hay
to feed them. There are also large bands
upon the range, where they were turned
during 0- warm weather, r and these in
no way can be saved. He estimate that
from 20 to 25 per cent of the livestock of
the county will be lost a a result of the
present storm. The storm wa not quite
so severe in Malheur county in the matter
of snow a it wa here, there being but
10 inches, but the weather ha been
colder; Tuesday morning the thermome
ter dropped to 18 degree below zero and
yesterday morning it wa 1 1 degree be
low. '
Two of the heaviest loser, according
to Mr. Robinson, will be Mr. Harknes
and J. V. Hansbury. Harknes. had a
band of 2000 sheep on the range when
the storm broke and Hansbury had be
tween 6000 and 7000 head, of sheep on
the desert towards Red Butte. Neither
of these sheepmen were able to get their
Rocks under cover and their efforts to
purchase hay are unavailing.
' There is not a ton of hay to be bought
at any price above Vale, Mr, Robinson
say, and although it is but 16 miles to
Ontario hay cannot be hauled in. The
roads-are in such a condition with mud
and enow that a tpan of horse would be
unable to haul more than 1 000 pounds

SUDDEN DEATH
Mrs. Margaret O'Neil, of Walla Walla,
who was here on a visit to her eon
Georgtt, and daughter, Mrs. Richard Kelley
died last n;ght at the residence of her
daughter, Mrs. R. Kelley, on Park street.
Mrs. O'Neil was in excellent health un
til a few day ago, when she was taken
ill, and expired suddenly.
Mr. Kelley will leave with her remains
on the belated west bound train of today,
Both Mr. O'Neil and Mrs. Kelley have
the sympathy of the entire community in
their great bereavement

Huffman is still making anxious inquiries
for her husband, who disappeared from
his home on the 51st day of last July.
He is described as a very thin man,
weighing about 1 25 pounds, light com
plexion, blue eyes, height 6 feet 7 1-2
inches,-brown hair inclined to curl, and a
short brown mustache. His occupation
was that of a printer, but sometimes he
worked -at surveying or with surveying
parties. .
