Blue Mountain Grange No. 345, P. of
H. met in regular session, March 7. 1 906.
After the regular routine of business was
finished, a bountiful lunch was served. In
the afternoon, the lecturer conducted the
program. J. W. McAlister introduced the
subject of sowing and growing alfalfa.
The subject was thoroughly discussed
by Bros. Jasper, Reynolds. Davis. D. A.
McAlister and Huffman, and much valu
able information was brought forth. C.
D. Huffman suggested that we discuss
the subject of cover crops at some future
time. Two resolutions were presented
for adoption, by J. W. McAlister and W.
R. Jasper as follows:
Whereas; By the Iniative and Refer
endum law, the Constitution of our state
is in danger, from the fact that it may be
amended by a petition of 8 pec cent of
the voters, to place it on the ticket, and
then a majority of the votes cast thereon,
makes it a law, thereby defeating the
very object for which the Constitution
was intended. Therefore be it resolved
oy uie Blue Mountain Urange, that we
favor a more stringent law in this respect
by requiring 20 per cent of the voters
on a petition, to have an amendment put
on at the ' coming election, and then it
should receive sixty per cent of the elect
oral vote. , . y
i J RESOLUTION NO. 2 -
Whereas: In view of the fact that a
great burdefi is placed upon the farmer
and other producers, by the crimes com
mitted thro' the use of intoxicating drinks.
Therefore, be it tesolved by Blue Mount
ain Grange that we favor a heavy state
license.. . .
Resolutions unanimously adopted.
Sec. Blue Mountain Grange No. 548,

J. R. Whitney, who is 6 candidate to
succeed himself for republican nomination
as state printer has made an excellent
officer. We are personally acquainted
with Mr. Whitney and know him to be a
man worthy the office. , He i a native
Oregonian, a graduate of the University
of Oregon, and is an old-timer in the
printing business. He is a friend that

taken his hand in a friendly shake. He

merchant, and be i a man such as a free
born Westernir like to meet - H win no

he will be re-elected. It 1 usual to give
to every ttate officer a second term when
he has mad an efficient officer. Vale

J. H. Aitkin continue to hold a strong
grasp on the state treasureshlp. Other
cagdidatee have appeared but none seem
to affect the opinion that the leader halls
from Eastern Oregon and that his careful
canvass of the state will lose any of its
strength and popularity with the voters.
The chances for the Huntington man for
tho nomination and. of course, election is
good.E. .

London. March 1 4 There wae offered
for sale at Christie's today what experts
affirm is the original of the memorandum
issued by Nelson from the "Victory off
Gadiz the 1 0th of October, 1 SOS." The
memorandum is on the method of en
gaging the French fleet. Various copies
of the doctment exist, of course, but i
was not until recently that the rtublic
learned of the existence of the original
draft, in Nelson's autograph. For years
it has been in the possession of a family
living not far from Merton Abbey. It. is
expected to bring a fabulous price. Nine
years ago, when the autograph of Nel
son's memoir of his birth, life and servic
es, carrie under the hammer at Sotheby's
a dealer bought it for $5,000, and sold it
to an American shortly afterward for a
mnch higher price.
