Tessa figures . were tablulated on
March 10, and show the registered vote
of the county by precinct ae received at
the office of the county clerk and show
the political complexion of the county.
This will undoubtedly be interesting read
ing. About one half of the , voters have
registered and if this proportion contin
ues, the Republican plurality inthiscoun'.y
will be between 900 and 1000: It is
quite possible however that so far the
Republicans have had more incentive to
register than the Democrats and the Re
publican plurality may prove to be some
where between 600 and 700.
The column marked miscellaneous (M) is
made up of those who refused to desig
nate their politics and others a Populist

' RtADT rCR AHY EMERGENCY c""
(Scrippe News Association)
Peking. Mar. 12-Th American Lega
tion in this city is prepared for any
emergency and the reports of serious
anti-foreign riots in various parts of
China have no terrors for the members
of the Legation, who live within their
fortified enclosure as in a city by them
selves, f The last preparation have been
completed, and if it should become nec
essary, the Legation will be able to stand
a long seige. The American Legation in
this city is a regular fortress and is the
first official residence owned by the
American government in any foreien
country. , . . .
The buildings were constructed by
Sydney W. Meeles. assistant sunarvitins
architect of the Treasury Department,
wno was sent to China after the Boxer
troubles, more than three fears ami. for
the purpose of building eafe retreat for
me memoers of the American Legation.
He completed his task recently and re
turned to the United States. '
The building are of buck and stone
and of very solid construction. The larg
est building is for the use of the Minister.
Surrounding it are buildings for the sec
retaries, the chancellary building and a
number of smaller structuree. They are
all built closely together and are sur-
"i iijniuii wau of masonry.
A short distance back of the wall on one
side is the great city wall on which has
been constructed an American fort,
equipped with small guns. The American
Legation is now as well protected as any
of the other legations. In case of emerg
ency the American residents in Peking
could find refuge in the legation quarters.
The present garrison of the American
fort ie not very strong, but should it be
come necessary, there are enough troops
available in Manila and two transports
arc In the harbor of Manila, ready to
bring a etrong force of American soldiers
to Peking In case of trouble.
