An estimate of the timber growing on what is known as the "the north grove" of the Calaveras Dig i rees urove. in California, has just been completed by the Forest Service of the .'Department of Agriculture. Th area covered by the big trees is about one hundred acres. The entire north grove comprises of 640 acres. This work forms part of the cooperative forest stud les which the service has undertaken at tne request of the state of California. There is an earnest and widespread de- sire to save the Calaveras grove from such as would result in its destruction. The owner is willinor to disoosa of it and an accurate and. satisfactory appraisal of uie vaiue or tne timber should help to an agreement on a fair price if congress sees fit to purchase it. . , Washington, March 9. For the benefit of the growing fig industry of California. the Department of Commerce and Labor has gathered as manv facta at oostible about the fig raising and packing in Smy rna. The department refers to the assertion that California produces better Smyrna figs than the original, but diplo matically refuses to confirm or deny the claim.. in Smyrna." says the report, and are in full vigor in the fifteenth year. Fig trees on the low plains yield fruit which is both larger and richer in saccharine matter. The fruit ripens about the middle of August, when it is picked and dried in the open air for from three to six dav It is then packed in sacks of about 250 pounds eacn, two or which constitute a load for a camel, and then are transport ed to the nearest railroad station., After arrival at Smyrna, camels likewise trans port the sacks to the warehouses of the dealers. Carts are not employed in this connection, as the fruit is liable to be damaged when the sacks are piled on each other. . The arrivals from the coun ous great packing houses, who haVe each . large corps of employees, chiefly wom en and girls, for the operations of sorting , washing, drying and packing the fruit This means work for manv thousand in Smyrna during the months of September and October,-and the average degree of prosperity among the lower classes dur ing the entire year Is largely dependent upon the amount of money set in motion during this short period. "The sorting of the fig is carried out with great care. . Color, but more espec ially size and thickness, or rather thinness or sun. guide tne classification. The in ferior grades, the so-called "hordas" culls or refuse, are eliminated and sold for purposes of distillation. A certain quantity of this grade is exported to Aus tria and Hungary and used as a substi tute for Chicory. The delicate flatvor of Tienna coffee, is due to the presence of dried fiff powder. The batter nrnHn. nr prepared for export in various ways. The least expensive Is . packing in linen or other bags, and is used usually for the less valuable qualities. The finer grades are subjected to a certain manipulation before being tightly packed in boxes con taining from 1 to 11 pounds.. During the manipulation the workmen continually dip their fingers in sea water. As a result the fruit is better preserved and the sweetness is not diminished by long keep ing. The term "macaroni figs" is applied to fruit which has been eentlv rolled be tween the palms of the hand, to as to rosemble an elongated ellipsoid." KOTItf Of GRADES. I herkby announce myself as : Candidate for the Republican nom ination for Justice of the Peace, eubject to the primary nominating election to be held April 20th. Wm. Grant. GOOD WORK . anouier object lesson has just been given on the need of equal suffrage. The Mississippi senate has defeated tha kill to forbid child labor, by a vote of 20 to 8. i he women of Mississippi have worked hard for this measure of protection for the children.
