Washington, Mar. I Senator Dolliver
answered Senator Foraker today and
declared that he was not "A mouthpiece
of the administration". - "But ' he Is
credited with having the fullest approval
of the ' President," declared Senator
Foraker. Dolliver stated that Senator
Elkins in the previous Congress had intro
duced ' measures embodying the samei
provisions as the pending bill.
Dolliver explained the necessity of the
harmonious working between the carrier
and the shipper and that within the last
few years the traffic agents and the ship
pers had formed boards of concilation and
had upheld the Interstate Commerce
Commission and had denounced its de
Dolliver declared "That it is not in line
of this bill to be drawn in a spirit of hos
tility to the American railroads and that
not one word was written in malice." He
scoffs i at lodge s speech as a "Learned
essay" and maintained that he held that
the railroads should be made to know
that they are servants and are not mast
ers. He declared that the policy of gov
iramwii ownership or rauroaos was "a
cheap form of socialism'.' and, paid a trib
ute to the President saying "The day is
near when the people will treasure grate
fully the blunt and fearless platform of
Theodore Roosevelt and 1 propose to de
fend it here." .

smith, is in the city today transacting
business. Mr. Alexander reports Imbler

It is rumored that ex-sheriff or Elmore
county, Idaho, while in La Grande, had
the misfortune of having a pair of shoes
stolen from him, while walking around on
the streets yesterday.

The rumor has been abroad ' for the

underwent an operation a few weeks am
for appendicitis, had taken a relapse but
nis many friends will be pleased to learn
that it was all a mistake and that he is

Miss Elsie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
NeoAcklee has . the diptheria. She
had, 4 a,hout two years ago and there aas
not, been a case in the city for several
months. Dr. Richardson the attending
physician says it is just possible that
some germ ''from'' the former case may
be the case.' He anticipates . nothing
serious however.
Mr. Fred Holmes, president of the

Observer caller today and was enthusi
astic over the promising crop condition
which now confronts the farmers of this
county. The ground is now thoroughly
soaxeo and mere is plenty of snow in the
mountains to keep ud the streams durino

Gen. John H. Aitkin,' of Eastern Ore
gon, has announced himself as a candi-
cate for state' treasurer before the repub
lican primariee. Location and qualifica
tion gives to General Aitkin a strong lead
for the nomination. It seems conceded
that this nomination should go to Eastern
Oregon. Mr. Aitkin has all the peculiar
qualifications for the office. Lebanon
