Mr George W. Ruckman, of Alicel. was
in the city today and filed his petition
for the nomination for Representative for
this county. Mr Ruckman comes out
on a flat footed platform announcing
where he stands Regarding the election of
United States Senators, which we publish
below. ''
PLATFORM
If I am nominated and elected, I will.
during my term of office vote for such
measures that will insure equality and
reduction of taxes and compel economy
in public affairs.
In as much as I have been in the past
a firm believer in the election of a United
States Senator by the direct vote of the
people, my individual preference has
always been that of the people's choice
and I further state to the people of Ore
gon as well as to the people of my repre
sentative district that during my .term of
office I will always vote for the candidate
for United Statee Senator in Congress

Albuquerque, N. M Feb. 1 6 A hard
ride of forty mile across the mountains
saved John Conley's neck from the hang
man's noose this morning. Late yester
day evening Governor Hagerman received
wire that Conley had gone violently
insane while in the jail awaiting the hmir
of his execution. ' The governor ordered
an investigation and granted reprieve
of one week. The wires were down but
courier left Embuda on the wild ride
for Taos and reached there in time to
prevevent the hanging. Conley had killed
two men in a quarrel over mining matters.
At Weiser, Idaho, Albert Barber was
sentenced to seven years for killing Chas.
Macomb with a pocket knife.

Merry, the American minister to San
Jose, Costa Rica reports that the Costa
Rioah government has announced its in
tention of completing within the'vear th
nter-ocean railroad from Linton to Put -teronas.
Only twenty-flve milee of the
road remains yet to be constructed. ' It is
claimed that on account of the heavy
grades the road will not be valuable from
a commercial point of view as the Te
hauntepeo road, but by it Costa Rica will
be able to market its coffee to a better
advantage. This road will make for
tourists one of the most delightful trips
across the Isthmus. Travelers wlil pre
fer the Costa Rica route to the shorter
Panama route because it is considered
more healthful. 1
