City election ooly thirty days hence
and so few candidates. There is plenty
of time yet for a lively fitUe interesting
campaign.
The year 1906 will certainly be a
record breaker so far as this country is
concerned. Are you prepared for the
rush? It is coming sure. Get ready.
Miss Anna Hall, of Cncmnati, is co
des vormg to push a bill through the Ohio
legislature, providing that persons suffer
ing from incurable diseases, or from fatal
inkiries. may be legally put to death m
any painless way which physicians may
prescribe. Anna may gain some notori
ety out of ber idea, but it will not became
a law.
It is the opinion of soma business
""experts" in newspaper-making that if
they go to any expense outside of the
beaten path to give their advertisers some
additional value for their money, they
will hare no profit left for themselves.
These are the sort of men. who. Eke the
stingy grocer, pick flies out of the suear

In former years the city election in La
Grande was made the bulwark whereby
to capture the primaries. Isn't it nice
that all that is past history and the people
hand's the primaries no matter which
way the city election of La Grande may
go. . We are gradually securmg our free
dom throughout the state. This freedom
is the kind that has come to stay. - This
new primary bw may require a few
more changes but it has done much for
Oregon. .. .

The question arises where does all this
sugar come from? In answer we will
say that we import from foreign countries
big shiploads of sugar. In the year 1 903
the imports of sugar made from beets
from the several - beet cagar ' making
countries aggregated 87.130.805 pounds
and the same year we imported cane
sugar to the amount of 4,075.633,121
pounds making Cn total of sugar import
ad that year foot op 4.162.761.926
pounds for which were paid to foreign
sugar makers $72,088,973.
-ne same year. lags, there uert
1.E86.706.000 pounds of beet sugar
made in the United States, and 657.
609.770 pounds of cane sugar.
, The above show that great consumers
as the American people are of sugar
they are eery dependent upon foreign
country for their sugar supply.
