When'" Yon Yonson" shows in this city
at Stewards Opera House on Monday
Feb, IS what is without doubt one of
the most evenly balanced companies ever
seen in comedy erama. will be introduced
by Manager P. J. Kennedy. This earnest
worker in the theatrical field, selected the
"Yon Yonson" players with particular
regard to their fitness to look, dress and
portray the many amusing characters In
the late Qua Heege's masterpiece. Not
a single detail has been overlooked In
staging this production for its fifteenth
successive tour of the principal cities of
the United States. The performances
are all under the personal direction of the
owner and manager and are therefore,
certain to be kept at the top notch of ex
cellence, It is also certain that this sea
son's company excells any which has
Players In last season's company who
made the greatest individual "hits" have
been retained and new ones added to
make the ensemble as nearly perfect as
possible. At the head of this company
are Earl K. Mitchell, one of the hand
somest and most talented players ever
brought to America, and Venie Atherton,
that whom there is no more competent
character comedienne In the country.
There are other popular men and women
players, quite a number of refined special
ties, much good music and exceptionally
beautiful scenic and costume accessories.
There is also the great "Lumbermen's
Quartette" which has made such a great
hit throughout the county seasons.
A OLII CLUB OP MERIT
Glee Clubs come and Glee Clubs go,
and their shows are of varying merit, but
the one which is always sure of a wel

have sung several times in La Grande in
the last few years, and each succeeding
time have been greeted by a larger house.
This year the club is stronger than ever,

KfllED NEAR THE DALLES
Coroner Burget returned last night
from Wyeth, where he was called to hold
an inquest on the body of a man found
about one-quarter of a mile east of that
station, on the 0. R. & N.' railroad track
yesterday morning, by the, nightwatch
man, as he was returning from his ''work
The body proved to be that of a young
man by the name of Francis Fitszpatrick
who was employed as foreman, over the
Jap gang at the tie treating plant at
Wyeth. The last seen of him alive was
on Tuesday evening, at 8 o'clock, when
he left his home a short distance west of
the station and said he had to make ! a
call, and it is supposed that he was going
to spend the evening at a point about
half a mile east of the station. Chronicle

canaoian troubles
Mr. Ellsworth Plumstead, the charact
er delineator, is one of the few American j
entertainers who have attempted to
amuse Canada. He says he prefers the
United States. Canada is too much like
Great Britain; it takes an ax to make a
joke penetrate, and by the time it has ,
made its way through, Plumstead has 1
finished with "My sister's best feller's
girl's brother," and has started in on
"Robespierre." And it seriously annoys '
him to be laughed at when he is doing
..ri !npM

Moreover, Plumstead's "worst", aud
ience was in Canada, lots of it For in
stance, in Harrowsmith, Ontario, the man
who signed the contract ran the hotel and
saloon. He expected to lose something on
the entertainment and so emptied his
bar-room into the lecture hall, making
each toper "dig up" a half dollar, but sup
plying them with a large black bottle for
consolation, They sat by the stove, emp
tied their bottle and then had it filled
again. The entertainer offered 'to pay
their admission from his own pocket if
they would take their clothes and go. But
they stayed, and he had to fight it out.
At Hawksbury, Quebec, the Jail is locat
ed in the front part of the "op'ry," as Mr,
Plumstead found out much to his disgust
He was in the midst of "The Story of a
Mustard Plaster," when the town mar
shal and a "drunk'entered the other es
tablishment and by yells, groans and
swearing easily gained the entire atten
tion of the . audience. Mr. Plumstead
waited a moment and then remarked
that ha would leave the plaster on for a
few moments Until the counter attraction
had finished his "stunt." That remark
saved the evening, but is it any wonder
that Plumstead prefers the United States?

POSTAGE FOR VALENTINES
To insure the prompt delivery of valen
tines the proper postage must be affixed
to them. Every year trouble is caused
the post-office employes and grief comes
to senders of valentines because su meant
postage is not affixed.
When valentines in sealed enclosures
are sent to any point in the United States
2 cents for each half ounce is the required '
postage, which is the ordinary first class
rate. When writing accompanies the
valentines, whether in sealed enclosure or
not 2 cents for each half ounce is re
quired. If valentines are sent in packages
or boxes, and no . writing accompinies
them 1 cent an ounce postage is required;
when sent in envelopes, unsealed, and no
writing accompanies them, they take the
third class rate, or 1 -2 cent an ounce.
