judges, Mesdames Hays, Lyle and Mall
ory gave their decision in favor of the
affirmative.

Mrs. Fred Kiddle, of Island City enter
tained the 600 club yesterday afternoon.
Mrs. Kiddle is a decidedly bright enter
tainer, and always performs her duties
as hostess in a manner most pleasing to
her guests. Mrs. Bohnenkamp was high
est score winner and was awarded an
elegant china plate.

came up from Elgin last night to attend
the county court which convened this

day, Mr. Slater states that he has seven
boarders at the present time.
S. L Brooks was talon suddenly sick
yesterday afternoon while at the court
house and was taken ' to the Sommer
House where he received medical attend
ee. He is considerable better to
day.
A letter received .frorri J. A. Ulsh, of
Kosmos, Wash., who is interested in the
Grande Ronde mines, indicates that he
was a member of the last Washington
legislature. He says he will visit La
Grande this summer.
Mr. Barr, of Alberta, Canada, has been
in me city ror several days purcnasing a
train load of horses. He has not been
meeting with the success that he antici
pated. He is buying unbroken stock th t
weighs anywhere from 1000 pounds to
1400, any age up to seven.
Lot J. Pearce. of Salem, who is a can
didate for the office of secretary of state
befotathe Republican primaries, is in the
valley looking after his interests. Mr.
Pearce is not a stranger in this county by
any means. In 1 889 he was manager of
the implement firm of Knapp, Burrell &
Company at Island City. He left on the
Elgin tram this morning and expects to
return this evening.

Mr. D. D. Lonii. of Seattle, representing
a bridge building firm of Seattle, is in the
city to wait upon the county court in re
ference to the Wallowa river bridge,
Because C. A. Johns failed to obtain a
leave of absence from the council before
he went to Portland three weeks ago,
Baker City is without a mayor and Pres
ident Bowen of the council will preside at
the next meeting of that body at which
either Mr. Johns will be re-elected to
office or his successor chosen.
w nen Mr. jonns returns home and is
appointed to fill his former office it will
be-necessary for him to go through all the
red tape required of a new officer and he
will be compelled to again take his oath
of office before the city auditor, within 10
