Humphreys, orWashington, called upon
the President this morning to ask for a
special commission to jnvestigate the Va
lencia affiir. . The President said that he
would take the matter up with Metcalf,
nd see what could be done. ' Metcalf
says he Is doing all he can under the law.
Humphreys said that he did not question
the honesty of the inspectors, but didn't
believe 'that . they were competent to
handle jjhe investigation. ' He said "It is
the openly expressed belief in Seattle that

Secretary- Taft' announced this after

Exress, No. 6, 4 miles east of Bridal Veil
at 6:30 thii m rn'ng. No. 6 Wae running
awaif, probably caused by abroken'steam
pipe, The engineer and fireman wero
drin from the cab by th Wrfibl cloud
of steam. Every person in th rear end
of the Pullman, on No, 5 was killed or
injured. The car was totally demolished.

Th flyer was standing on ths 'main track
at that place. About four mile east a
steam pipe in the engine , of th express
burst quickly filling the cab with highly
heated steam, almost scalding to death
Engineer Swain and hi fireman while
they were endeavoring to stop th train.
, Swain was so badly scaidsd - by th
live steam that he could not reach the
lever. He then crawled back over the
tender to reach the air pipe. . Even as he
was doing this his train rushed past the
flagman, who had been sent back- ' to
stop the approaching express. Th next
minute came the crash. Fireman Lewis
Morgan finally aided in shutting off the
steam. . . . , '
The engine of the express ploughed Its
way through the Pullman on the rear of
the flyer. Both car and .engine lay
tangled mass of wreckage,, enveloped in
a cloud of scalding steam, . , , ., . ,

' Those who were in th Pullman.-- un
conscious of the destruction that was
rushing onto them, lay dead and injured
among the debris.
When th crash occurred there was the
greatest excitement at Bridal Veil. The
entire population rushed to the assistance
of th wounded. There was but ons
physician In th village and an appeal was
sent to Portland, where a special train
with' physicians . and others was dis
patched to the scene.
' A hurried examination showed three
dead and one dying. Several others 'are
seriously injured. The dead and injjred
wer sent to this - city as. sain as the
pecial train arrived.
No. 6 left- La. Grande last evening
about one and one-half hours late end
