LOST MONEY Oil PA1AMA (ANAL
Run Fmnr.lco. Jan. 20. Pacific Mail
officials, it has just recently been learned,
have been losing thousands of dollars on
the traffic to Panama. - The conpany put
into effect a steerage rate of $5l to the
isthmus and S40 to New York. It is
now found that a large number of travel
ers to the isthmus have been buying
through tickets to New York.
The Pacific Mail practice was 'continu
ed six months before it waa realized what
was being done. By that time they had
lost a goodly sum in revenue. They have
put a stop to this by exacting the $50
rate to New York.'giving a rebate of $10
to the party on arrival there.
The Pacific Mail is therefore in the
rebate business and is now the only
transportation company engaged in dom
estic traffic that is known to paying re
bates. As it is not subject to the Inter
state csmmerce law it cannot be molest
ed in the rebate scheme.

SOMEWHAT MIXED
Dr. Mudge, an American clergyman,
was one day presented with ' gold-headed
cane by some of his admirers,. Dur
ing that week also a new patent pig-killing
and .sausage-making machine was
tried in the same city. The reporter . or
the compositor must have got the copy
somewhat mixed, for this is how a notice
of the presentation appeared in the local
Paper;
"Several of Dr. Mudge's friends called
upon him yesterday, and after a brief
conversation the unsuspicious pig was
seized by the hind legs and slid along
a beam until he reached the hot water
tank. His friends explained the object of
their visit, and presented him with a very
handsome gold-headed butcher, ' who
grabbed him by the tail, ewung him
around, slit his throat from ear to ear,
and in less than a minute the carcass
was in the water. Thereupon he came
forward, and said that there were times
when the feeling overpowered one; and
for that reason he would not attempt to
do more than thank those around him, for
the manner in which sucn a huge animal
was cut into- fragments was simply as
tonishing. The doctor concluded his re
marks when the machine seized him, and
in less time than it take to write it the
pig was cut into fragments and worked

j (HEAP MILK OR MILK !
CHEAP, WHICH?
Are you buying your milk cheap or
are you getting cheap milk? That
is the question which every con
sumer should consider before
buying. There are five properties
contained in milk, viz; ash, or bone .
material, caseine or curd, butter--fat.
sugar, and water, in proportion
of .3 of 1 ash. 3.5 caseine,
4 butUrfat, 6 sugar. 87
watar. Now there are 13 solids
and 87 water in a 4 milk, that
is in milk containing 4 buttnrfat
This ratio holds good wheather of
a high or low test. i. s. if you
have a milk testing 6 f the other
solids will be increased in propor
portion. if a 3 they will decrease
in like manner. Now the solids are
' what is, or what should be consid
ered in buying milk, as tha water
Can be had for the pumping. Now :
let us consider for a moment be
fore we buy- wheather we are'
plying a h gh or low price for these
solids. A 3 milk contains 9.76
solids and U0.25 water, a 6 milk
contan.j I6.2u solids and
83.75 water. Now if a 3
milk is worth $1.60 per quart per
month, what should a 6 sell for?
Let's see, if we pay $1.60 for milk
containing 9.75 solids, at the
same price milk containing 16.25
solids should sell for $2.t0, or you
can to every three quarts of 6
milk - add two quarts of water,
making 6 quarts of 3 milk, i. e.
three quarts of 6 milk is equal
to five quarts of 3 milk, at the
present price 5 quarts of 3 milk
( $I.6u$7.60; three quarts of
6 milk (it $2.00$6.00, i. e. you
are getting the same amount of
solids for 6.00 in a 6 milk that
you get in a 5 milk for $7.60. Are
you getting your milk ohsap or are
you getting cheap milk, which? .
