STATION IS DOIHG
Wbile Somewlidt Ctirtdiled, Mucli WcrK cl i Valuable
. Cbaracter is Bcinj AccompIisIiGiI.
Owing to the fact that the-appropriation
for the Eastern Oregon Experiment sta
tion, at our last legislature, fell into the
hands of the Referendum; and the pass
ing of the Carter bill which came into
.rt May 1 9. 1 90S, providing that here
after all moneys received . from uie in
come of rents of state property and from
the sale or disposition of surplus products
of all state institutions, must be deposited
in the state treasury, the Eastern Ore,Tn
Experiment Station was placed in a very
critical condition financially. And all that
prevented it from closing its doors, similar
to that of our various normal schools, was
the business manner in which the Board
of Regents financed the station from the
start. Realizing that the station was de
pendent upon the state for" maintenance,
and fearing that such conditions which
now exist, might come to pass; they wise
ly deposited in the First National Bank,
all moneys received from the sale of sur
plus products and rents of Various por
tions of the station, not used for experi
mental purposes. The Station has been
drawing on this bank deposit since Octo
ber 1904, at whiciLtime the last available
appropriation was exhausted. The re
maining deposit was not sufficient to con
tinue the work as usual at-the Station, so
it was decided to discontinue experiments
with stock feeding and breeding, rent all
farming land, and throw the entire effort
tt ward experiments with grains, grasses
and forage crops. For conducting these
experiments 120 acres were reserved.
While the station is yet young, the work
done has been highly satisfactory. Many
new grasses have been introduced with
marked success. Among those most
prominent are Oregon Bromus, Oregon
Evergreen, Reed Fescue and Festuca Hy
brid. In the experimental plat of grasses
there are 68 varieties; since these-are
grown side by side under the ' same con
ditions, the various' characteristics and
manners of growth developed in the diff
erent individuals make an intensely inter-

esting comparison. Experiments with
Australian Salt Aush and Bermuda-grass
were very successful last season, and
much hope is entertained that they will
prove to be of great value for our poorest
alkali soils. ' .
Recognizing the importance of range
..-.it!:-;, Nation will endeavor to
take up co-operative experiments in var
ious sections of Eastern Oregon with
grasses suitable for this purpose.
Believing the sugar beet industry to be
of great importance In this section, much
attention is given to this line of work, and
the results already obtained are exceed
ingly encouraging. The Station has dem
onstrated without question, that high
grade sugar beet seed can be produced at
home, conditions being very favorable here
for this industry. '
Extensive experiments in potato culture
are being carried on; arrangements ''have
been made for a test of 45 varieties the
coming season. Much interesting work
has been done regarding ' the size and
treatment of the seed potato..
Keeping in mind the all important grain
industry, the Station has at present 62
fall varieties growing in plats of equal
size: In order to make a practical variety
test, each sample was sown in rows six
inches apart, at the rate of a bushel and a
peck per acre. Each plat will be harvest
ed and weighed separatively; interesting
and important results are expected. Many
varieties of spring grain will also be test
ed in a like manner. A variety of Mac
aroni wheat introduced from North Dako
ta last year did remarkably well, but like
many of our most promising wheats, it is
bearded; realizing that this is a serious
objection, the Station ' has endeavored,
through selection tad careful work, to
produce these varieties without beards.
The results so far have been more than
were expected, for in many varieties the
beards have been decidedly diminished,
and in a few, entirely eliminated.
