DEPENDING ON OTHERS
For the ten months ending with October
1905 the tonnage movement in the for
eign trade of the United States is given
in the Monthly Summary of Commerce
and Finance published by the United
States Department of Commerce and
Labor as follows: Entered during the
fiscal year ending June 30th., 1906, sail
vessels 3.182,929 tons, steam ships 27,-
800,288 tons. Total tonnage for the
year 80,883,217; of this tonnage employ
ed in our foreign trade there were 1,363,-
163 sail and 5.7 17,461 steam owned by
Americans, a total of American tonnage
employed in our foreign trade of 7.080.
524 tons or less than one quarter of the
tonnage necessary to conduct our foreign
trade.
' The effect of depending on foreign ships
to do our transportation is illustrated by
the following statement from official
source; "Special Agent Crist, of the
'Department of Commerce and Labor,
has reported that merchandise shipped by
expensive transcontinental and Pacific
routes cannot come into competition in
the Orient with like commodities' coming
by the all-water routes from European
countries. Until steamship lines regularly
ply between .Atlantio ports and North
China, as English and German lines are
now doing, he says, goods from this
country must go through many more
hands than European goods and must go
at a high cost of transportation, deadly to
competition."
Every good citizen will take the trouble
to register.
Of course you are going to register, but
have you registered yet?
Remember that in order to vote at the
primary nominating election you must
register. It is your duty to register.
If you realy wish to have a voice re
garding the men who shall hold office you
should register. ' Only those who register
ave a voice in the nominations.
Every man who does his duty and re
gisters becomes a delegate to the greatest
nominating convention ever held in the
state of Oregon. Are you a delegate?
Candidates for office are moving about
as much as possible but are being ham
pered ty the lack of registered voters to
sign their petitions.
In Justice to decency and public policy
the city should revoke the license of C. C
Rockwell. He for years has been a dis
turbing element in this city and such men
should not be permitted to be in the
saloon business.
Arizona's delegate in congress is charg
ing about demanding that an investigation
be made into the allegation that a corrupt
lobby is maintained in Washington to
fight statehood. If he should secure an
investigation he might discover more than
he wishes to know officially. Every
body in Washington seems to understand
that such a lobby is on hand and is mak
ing itself very conspicious. It opposes
statehood, single or joint, and it has not
taken any great pains to keep iu opinions
secret It is a product of Arizona of
which the territory has no reason to feel
proud. Idaho Statesman.

The death of Marshall Field will be
universally regretted wherever the public
possed a knowledge ot tne man. lie u
ieved in and practicedthe "square deal."
Though he accumulated a fortune of over
$100,000,000 he never took advantage
of another, or attempted to secure a mo
nopoly on any of the necessaries of life.
The trusts and combines had no allure-'
ment for .him. He was one of the few
men who secured wealth in a legitimate
manner. His annual payment of taxes
was larger than that of any other man in
the United States, though others . may
have been worth, twice as much. He
made no effort to avoid payment, because
he felt that it was right he should bear
his share of the public burdens. So far
as the public knows, there was but one
Marshall Field, in business sagacity, far
sightedness and high ideals of commercia
honor, .
