No cabinet official has had a more in
teresting story to tell this year than that
told in the annual'report of the Secretary
of Agriculture. It is a record-breaking
story, such as no other nation in any age
has been able to tell. The value of the
year's farm products not the value in
the retail markets but on the farms is
estimated at $6,418,000,000. That sum
would buy out six steal ' trusts paying
par for all the stock. It would more
than pay the enormous national debt of
France or Russia. , It would purchass all
the gold produced in the wjrld in the
last twenty years. Tne value is well

In the fall of 1892 Mr. A. E. Eaton, the

and one of the largest land, owners in
Union county was engaged in freighting
business. His franchise, (thoy did not call

While peacefully plodding along near the
present Mecham station one of the wheels
of his lead wagon suddenly went all to
pieces. There was no place nearer than
La Grande where a new wheel could be
purchased, neither was there a wagon
maker any nearer. There was one of
two things to do, either leave the wagon
or fix it on the spot The only tools avail
able were an ax and a file. Mr. Eaton
had never "filled a wheel" but that fact
did not remove the necessity for speedy
repairs. He began to-do some thinking
and it finally occured to him- that on one
of his previous trips he had seen an aguer
about eight miles distant from the 'break
down. This instrument would "be inest
matable value to him and he therefore
unhitched one of his wheel horses and set
off for the Dry Creek cabin. Ha got the
auger and returned. Then the real work
commenced, but the details are unim
portant. He filled that wheel with timber
cut from a fir log and set the tire, and
got the proper amonnt of "dish." He not
only was only able to bring his load to its
destination, but used the wheel the fol
lowing summer and made saveral trips
over the Blue Mountains.

Milk Talk No. 1.
I CHEAP MILK OR MILK I
! sue in umma .!
VHLHr t - fi iiimk -,--v.;
Are you buying your milk cheap or
are you getting cheap milk? That !
is the question which every con-
sumer should consider before
buying. There are five properties J
contained in milk, viz; ash, or bone J
material, caseire or curd, butter
fat sugar, and water, in proportion
of .3 of lfr.ash, 8.3 caseine,
4 butterfat, 6$ sugar, 87
water.. Now there are 13 solids
and 87 water in a 4 milk, that
is in milk containing 4 butterfat
This ratio holds good wheather of
a high or low test i. e. if you
have a milk testing 6 the other
solids will be increased in propor
portion. if a 1 they will decrease
in like manner. Now the solids are
what is, or what should be consid
ered in buying milk, as the water
can be had for the pumping. Now
let us consider for a moment be
fore we buy wheather we are
paying a high or low price for these
solids. A3 milk contains 9.76
solids and 90.25 water, a 6 milk
conUins 16.25 solids' and
83.76 water. Now if a 8
milk is worth $1.60 per quart per
month., what should a 6 sell for?
Let's see. if we pay $1.50 for milk
containing 9.75 solids, at the
same price milk containing 16.26
solids should sell for $2.50, or you
can to every three quarts of 6
milk add two quarts of water,
making b quarts of 3 milk, i. a.
three quarts of 6 milk is equal
to five quarts of 3 milk, at the
present price 6 quarts of 8 milk
(d $1.6o$7.50; three quarts of
b milk (if) $2.00t$6.00. i. a. you
are getting the same amount of
solids for $6.00 in a 6 milk that
you get in a 8 milk for $7.60. Are
yog getting your milk cheap or are,
you getting cheap milk, which?
