published in Milwaukee, it is found' that
the total Roman Catholic : population of
the United States is 1S.6S1.944.1 an In
crease of 189.151 over the previous year.
The total number of Catholic priests, in
cluding seculars and regulars, is ' 14,484,
an increase of 627. ' The total number of
Catholic churches is 1 1.814, an I increase
of 427 over the previous:, year. The
number of children attending 'Catholic
parochial schools has increased 1,066,207
an increase of alrnost 56,000.

A satisfactory test of the new irriga
tion wheel invented by J. S. Mathews of
this city, has just been made in! the Des
Chutes river, near the mouth of. that
stream. " ....
The wheel made by Mr. Matthews
some time ago has been placed, in the
Des Chutes river, where a pump was at
tached and it worked succesafuly in
every way. The wheel floats in shallow
water and can be anchored in a stream
of any depth- and mad to operate a
pump or otiier-machinery. ,
Mr. Mathews feels sure that it will be
highly successt'cl in lifting water from
running stream for irrigation "i purposes
and will manufacture a number for this

Herald from Panama says the San Bias
Indians, numbering 30.000 'and inhabit
ing a strip of 100 miles along the lower
Atlantic coast of Panama, have seceded
from Panama and renewed their alleg
iance to Colombia. The revolt against
Panama is said to have been fomented by
Colombians. As these-Indians,' who in
habit the most-fertile part of the coast of
Panama, hay never been conquered or
subjected, the matter of Winging them
back under Panama's flag may prove
serious.

this afternoon and the expected came to
release him from ; his ' intense suffering,
Death was caused by a cancer which was
discovered nearly on year ago while he
was being operated upon for appendicitis.
The affairs of th University of which he

est under the direction of Dean Judson.
