Washington. Jan. 9. Women! Women!
Young women of healthy minds and
bodies. That is the pressing need of
Alaska today. So the chivalrous John G.
Brady of that territory sends out in his
annual report, just made public, an ap
peal for young women to come to Alaska,
hear the gentle words of love told by the
mighty men of the northwest and to try
home building. His is the true cry from
the wild for wives.
"As fine specimens of manhood as ever
stood on two feet are they who would be
come husbands." Declares this governor
who ought to know. "All health and
courage, they have come to a country in
arch of a fortune. They have not been
as successful as they ex pec ma, 'uul .y
have not given up the struggle. Man was
not made to live alone, even when pro
specting." But why not return to the
States for a wife? Governor Brady says
they have too much pride to corns back
to their old homes for a visit and a wife
as long as they have not the fortune.

"It is noticed." says the govornor, "that
schoolma'ams and other young women
who come here do not reside in a place
but a short time, before soma worthy ad
mirer turns up and tells the old story. : A
number of these chose matrimony during
past year. There should be no such thing
as race suicide in Alaska, where we have
more than nine square miles per capita.
But to get these young women, that is the
question. Shall the government resort to
importation of them, as women were
brought to Virginia centuries fcgo to rr.ir
ry the man who would pay her passage?"
How to do it the governor can't decide.
"It ia a delicate matter and not easy to
arrange, but it is desirable to have more
women of good mind and health to try
tills :.?? nd home building," says
he. "Those who have a love of children
and a dssire to rear a family should learn
what special advantages Alaska has to
hold to them."
It has been suggested Alaska would
be a good place for a match-making
mother to take her daughters.
POLITICS IN BAKER COUNTY
Sheriff H. K. Brown, of Baker county
was in Salem yesterday, having brought
a prisoner to the penitentiary. Mr. Brown
has served two terms as sheriff of Baker
county, and in pursuance of theunwritten
law of that county, which prohibits a
sheriff from serving more than two terms.
he will retire at the expiration of his term
next July.
Mr. Brown says political candidates are
the all-absorbing topics of interest in
Baker county. Baker county candidates
belieye in getting out early. In fact, this
is a characteristic of all Eastern Oregon
men. It was this spirit which caused
Hon. C. A. Johns and Judge Robert Eakin
to file their notices of intention' with the
secretary of state at the earliest possible
moment.
Mr. Brown says the nomination for
supreme judge is conceded to Judge Eak
in by the Republicans . generally in the
eastern part of the state. He has not
heard of any Republican, he says, who
aspires to the place in opposition to Judge
Eakin.
Locally the greatest interest centers in
the circuit judgeship for the eighth district
which comprises Baker county. This is a
new district, which was created by the
last legislature. Governor Chamberlain
appointed Samuel White as judge to serve
until the next election. Judge White is a
candidate for election before the people,
and will seek the Democratic nomination
at the primary election in April. His Re
publican opponent, in all probability, will
be W. C. Drowley, of Drowley & Levens.
Baker county is close when political
lines are sharply drawn. For many years
neither party has been able to elect a full
county ticket. The judgeship contest
promises to be an exciting one this year.
County Judge Wallace Trayillion. who
has held some office in the county for 50
years, will probably be a candidate for
re-election on the Democratic ticket
W. J. Lackner, who announced himself
for congress, will in all probabilify be op
posed in the Republican primary election
by State Senator John L. Rand. The
friends of Mr. Rand are urging him to
consent to the use of his name, and he is
seriously considering the proposition.
J. H. Aiken, of Huntington, would like
to have the Republican nomination for
state treasurer. This has been his am
bition for several years, and he may try
conclusions in April.
With two candidates for state offices
and two for congress, and a lively interest
taken in the contest for county nomina
tions, Baker county is in a political fer
ment already.
"Death was fast approaching, writes
Ralph F. Fernandez, of Tampa, Fla., de
scribing his fearful race with death, "as
a result of liver trouble and heart dis
ease, which had robbed me of sleep and
af all interest in life. 1 had tried many dif
ferent doctors and several medicines, but
got no benefit, until I began to use Elec
tric Bitter. So wonderful was their ef
fect, that in three days I felt like a new
man, and today 1 am cured of all my
troubles." Guaranteed at Newlin's Drug
YOUNG WOMEN .
English women of the highest rank and
social position are accustomed to take a
lively interest in elections, and to vote for
all offices save for members of Parliament
In the Isle of Man they have long exercis
ed full enfranchisement. , Australia has
given women full suffrage, as hat also
New Zealand. The United States has
ha approved of much that is good in
Australian political methods, and has
found it advisable to copy the Austrialian
ballot system, it would therefore be in
line with governmental advance to emulate
the modern, progressive spirit of the
land continent and enfranchise the
women of America, who are surely the
peers of their Australian sister.

LIVE MEN, LIVE LOCALITY,
At the' State Horticultural Society now
in session in Portland, the Journal says:
. "There are more Hood River fruitgrow
ers exhibiting this year than from all
other horticultural distr cts in the state.
The whole world is being made to know
that Hood River is on the map. and grows
"big red apples," and other fruit This is
because there is a set of the li vest men
in that locality found anywhere else.
Fruits will grow in hundreds of other
places in Oregon, a large, tempting and
luciou as in Hood River, but th world
doesn't know it The vim of th Hood
River people is commendable, and should
be imitated all over the state; and when
this is done, the word "Oregon" on a box
of fruit will find eager purchasers at the
highest prices in Europe, Asia and the
isles of the ocean.
