ORCHARD
Ca'dwell, Jan, The fourth day of
the work of the officers engaged in run
ning down the person or persons respons
ible for the murder of ex-G"vernor Frank
Steunenbuerg has ended w.th some pro
gress having been made.
The most important information gained
is perhaps the real name of the man call
ing himself Thomas Hogan. He has ad
mitted he is Harry Orchard. Further, he
has admitted he was in the Coeur d'AIe
nes until the time cf the trouble there in
1893. He was living in Burke and was a
membsr of the Burke Miners' union.
Sheriff Sutherland has identified him as
one he saw several times in that section
the past summer. Whether or not hi had
tc;r. th:r: ?r'? ' n-vmr. :nce the
year of the riots, is not known, but the
fact that he was there last summer is
h'ghly sign Scant, as it was thought he
was undoubtedly conferring with some of
his old associates. .
Where he has been since has not yet
been traced, but he came to Idaho from
Salt Lake. ' He shipped his trunk to Cald
well and then went to Hailey, following
his trunk here later. The trunk was
traced by means of the check. No. 270,
515.. HOCAN'S TRUNK
Hogan has claimed that his trunk was
sent here from Harrison, Idaho, but it is
learned that it was checked from Salt
Lake. It wis checked by George Alley,
baggageman at the latter place. This
was established by the number of the
check.
A DOUBLE
MURDER AT
lid (AMP
Reddiiig. Cal., Jan. 6 Tom and John
Prxe, pioneer miners, were murdered on
their mining claim today.
Tom, aged 60, left the cabin for the
claim at 8 o'clock. When he failed to re
turn to dinner, John, aged 64. went to
the claim. He found his brother shot
through the head and his body almost
buried to the neck in a grave.
John hastened home, told his wife of
Tom's murder, and sent a man to notify
the officers. John then went to the cabin.
As he reached the threshold a shot rang
out and he fell dead.

Telegram's Salem Bureau. Jan. 5 C.
A. Johns and Robert Eakin are the first
candidates to file their notice of intention
to become candidates for state officers at
the direct primary elecL'01 next April,
with the Secretary of State. Both no
tices were received by Secretary Dunbar
yesterday. Mr. Johns gives notice that
he will try for ths nomination "for Gover
nor, and Judge Eakin will be a candidate
for Supreme Judge.
The interest of these two candidates
will clash, if the Republican voters de
ck's that Eastern Oragon is entitled to
but one place on tho state ticket. It is
not expected that both will win, and yet
there is nothing to prevent them both be
ing nominated, as the voters in Eastern
Oregon can vote for both and it may turn
out that both will have a plurality.
' The consensus of opinion is that the
Multnomah Republicans will decide the
matter as bstwoen Johns and Eakin by
voting solid for one or ihe other.
