ABSOLUTE PERFECTION
"Absolute perfection." "The besTever
taken." Tnat is the way the Britt -Nelson
pictures are criticised by every
one who sees them. When the white
screen is made ready, everyone leans
forward with a worried look, expecting
good entertainment, yet hearing for blurs,
defects, occasions at the most important
times. Nothing of the kind occurs
Nothing goes wrong. The pictures flow
from the reel like water gliding over a
smooth current. No blurs, no breaks.
Nothing left out. Every detail of the
fight is there. No explanations or apol
ogies are needed, and nobody has to an
nounce at frequent intervals; "Owing to
a cloud, the next round is a trifle indis
tinct." Those pictures are prefection in
fullness, completion and detail, and leave
nothing to.be desired. As portrayals of
a great fistic battle, as landmarks in the
progress of the photographic art, they are
ings of an audience amid scenes of unsur
passed beauty, the effects are thrilling
At Cripple Creak." is a four act dramc

rescue of three innocent girls from the
clutches of Martin Mason, a vile hal
breed and keeper of a s iloon known as
"The Temple of David." The second act
opens in Rift Canyon, near Joe Mayfield's
mountain home. A pretty scene occu.s
here between the child Tatto and Joe.

of Joe Mayfield from the death trap laid
for him in the Last Dollar mine and his
rescue of Belle Gordon makes the third
act one of the most novel and thrilling
ever witnessed on the American stage.
The fourth act reveals the interior of Joe

, . Dearly beloved brethern. cheer up!
The. worst is yet to come. You are thirty
odd in number, and vou represent some of
Vila n
You got yourselves together at your em
ployer's behests and came out of your
snowstorms and your sleet, your knife
edged winds and your zero skies, away
and away by limited train to the velvet
lawns and poppy fields of Sunset Land
and the December summer of the heart's
desire. You cametodrinkin the goodness
of Southern Ca'ifornia in mid-winter and
incidentally (wheneverr you were able) to
write poetic prose about life at Yuletide
in the tovliest Climate on earth. Oh, yes
you did. I know.
The devil, then! They landed you
hence In the middle of a cold snap that
challenges the memory of the oldest real
estate inhabitant of the heath. They sat
you down to a feast of excellences in the
West and guyed you with derisive mock
ing when your oratorical image grasped
firmly the table-edge and rose slowly to
make them a speech. They put you to
bed at 6 of a Thursday morning, as the
cold gray dawn was breaking up in
chunks and routed you out at 7 to be
tra'nhauled to the beach. They fed you
t lere when you hungered not for the '
s;ght or smell of food, and made you
speak when you had rather fallen down in
sleep. They herded you aboard a little
steamer that was not big enough to hold
your growthful heads, and churned you
back and forth on the enraged bosom of
the Pacific for eight eternal hour off of
land. They delivered you not upon the '
hores of the Magic Isle, but took away
from you the accumulated largess of their
boasted California hospitality and fed
that &m to the fishes. Sore and sick
and yearnful for something, you know -not
what, they churned you back to main
land, shaken in stomach and in soul., And
then, unsettled and unpepsined, they cart
ed you off to VerdugoPark and tat spiced
bull's head before you and saw that you ,
gorged on beans. .
But, dearly beloved brethern, cheer upt
