JOINT INSTALLATION
A joint installation of the newlv elected
officers, of the Masonic lodge and the
Eastern Star was held last night at the
Masonio hall. Following the ceremonies
a banquet was given.

this city for several years. Miss Crowell is
a native daughter of this city and is well

J. F. Alden, of Starkey, was a La
Grande visitor today. Mr. Alden has a
logging contract from the Grande Ronde
Lumber Company, and states that he
expects to placa about seven hundred
thousand feet of logs in the riverthis
season. He reports tha snow about six
inches deep where"he is logging and that
his work is progressing nicely. '

A seven mill tax for the maintenance
of the public schools was voted at the
special school election. -
Mr. Pete Biever and wife, are down
from Pleasant Valley on a visit to rela
tives and friends, and will return th their
home tomorrow morning. During their
stay in the city they received many
pleasant calls from friends. Mr. Biever
was formerly a resident of this city, and
is at the present time a .trusted employe
of the O. R. & N. Co. and is stationed at
Pleasant Valley. -
SECOND OPERATION
A second operation was performed on
Mrs. John Hampson of La Grande, at St
Anthony's hosiptal yesterday evening.
She has recovered from this operation
and is getting along nicely today,
although the two delicate operations have
greatly weakened her. Mr. Hampson is
in the city attending her. East Oregonian
