by the city council last night at. its regular
meeting t which all -iiiAincilmen were
present The regular levy being ten mill
which cannot be exceeded, a special levy
of six mills was also ordered. fj , ,"
- Upon the report of the finance commit
tee showing that the sum of $13,515.60
is required as a result of the general levy
and the amount of taxable property is
$1,331,165 the 10 mill tax was ordered.
It also being shown that the sum of $,
186.93 is required for lights. $2,800 for
street sprinkling,., and $1,000 for the
public library, the additional levy was
imposed, making the total for that ordi
nance $7,896.90. '
Some discussion arose in connection
with the tax levy. Jt being the opinion of
Councilman Boweji that the street com
mittee should have been consulted as to
their needs before the finance committee
made its report and that a levy of 17
mills should have been made. ' Council
man Ellis and McCord are of a like opin
ion and opposed the measure ' to the last,

' AN AMUSina ARTICLE
i Some weeks ago the Portland Journal
obtained a picture of one of the 194 class
of locomotives running out of La Grande
and published an article that four of
these locomotives would soon be placed
on the run on the mountain division. This
article was published by the lesser papers
of the Inland Empire with but one or two
exceptions. A careful investigation proves
that these famous engines have been on
the run for the pas. six or seven months
and are not new to the citizens of La
Grande. To make it more interesting a
Pendleton dispatch to the Journal tells the
same old story over about these engines.
Following is the last article., .
"Pendletpn, Or Deo. 20-Four balanc
ed compound locomotives which were or
dered by the Harrimajo -system some time
agonave been assigned to the mountain
division of the O. R. A N. at Meacham
and at,,Telbcaset
"The locomotives represent the highest
achievements in modern mechanics tor
power and speed. On a level grade they
attain a speed of 85 miles an hour, and it
is stated that they will decrease the time
that has formerly been consumed on the
steep grades of this division.
The mair. specification of the new me
chanical monsters follows: Weight on
drivers, 138,000 pounds; weight of en
gine, 226.000 pounds; , total weight of
engine and loaded tender, 396 000
pounds: capacity of tender, 12 tons coal
and 9,000 gallons of water."

ing our products. These meetings are
