THE PHILIPPIHE ISUNDS
As congress is now ' laboring with
questions that our acquisition of th Phil
ippine Islands has thrown upon the Amer
ican people to solve, and because citizens
of Oregon should appreciate fully, the
responsibility that is upan them in having
these questions solved properly' and for
(he best Interest of all a few basic facts
will be mentioned.
There are 8,141 islands on which 7,-
655.426 people reside. Of this number
6.987.686 are classed as civilized, and
647.740 uncivilized.
The great bulk of th Philippine people
are Christian and have been for centuries.
When th low wage of sixteen cents a
day on sugar plantations, is donsidared

article that paid duty was sugar not
above No.' 16 Dutch standard; coin, of
which class of sugar there cam in said
eight months 91,086,690 pounds valued
at $1,990,999. This was 72,810,990
pounds more than came the eight months
ending August 1904. j
Th United States is not th only
country the Philippine Islands trade with.
During th eight month ending with
August 1 904 the import into these islands
from foreign countries other than th
United States aggregated $16,971,414
worth of stuffs; th exports for the same
period being $12,343,412; making the
foreign trade for the eight month total
629,519,856. ( '
Everybody pushed the Lewis and Clark
fair In 1905. Everybody in Union county
will Join the home push club in 1 906.
Property owners on Fir street are
already talking of building cement walk
in the spring.
The offices are seeking th men in
Union county. A'ter the first of the year
it is just possible that there will be
several men out seeking the office.

On of th Sunday schools in this city
teaching th doctrine, that it is better
to give than receive, had a dozen or more
classes try to discover as many families
a possible in th city where assistance
might be needed,. After a diligent search
th majority of th classes failed. This
i an axcsptjonly prosperous community.
It is only a few weeks until the North
western Fruitgrower Association meet.
It is reported that th Cove and Union
are both preparing splendid fruit exhibits.
Every portion of this county should be
represented as other counties are reported
to be preparing splendid exhibits. Under
the' circumstances Union county cannot
afford to take a second rate "position. We
have the fruit if it is properly exhibited.
