AMUSEMENTS
FRIDAY DECEMBER FIFTEENTH
, Managers will tell you no matter how
strong or impressive a play may be be.
women, who in everday life would swoon
at such- a small thing as a mouse, seldom
faint in a threitre. Two American
stars have had the experience, within
few months, of looking over : the foot
lights to see women fainting in their seats
The terrible prisont scene in Resurrec
tion" which Miss Blanche Bates played
ast season, had its swooning victims in
the audience, and the horrors of the
great third act . in "Ghosts" the Ibsen
drama, in which Mr. Harry Mestayer is
starring, has wrought so upon the nerves
of women in the audience that they have
fainted. It is in the third act that the
notable struggle between Oswald Alving
and his mother occurs, and the climax of
the act has been called, by James Hune
ker, the great critic of the New York Sun
' the most fearful climax in contemporary
drama" "Ghosts" will be presented at

" ; eagle's night'
The McEwen entertainment last night
received more attention than at any pre
vious evening. Some new features were
introduced and all the old ones repro
duced. The entertainment was up to the
usual standard, but the committee cf
leading Eagles failed to be in evidence.
The subjects used were the same who
have been upon the stage at each of , the
other demonstrations. From appearances
some one must have had an " acute case
of cold feet. Tonight winds up the week
of hypnotic fun and education, j
COMMERCIAL CLUB DANCE ?
The regular Friday evening Commer
cial Club dance , which was given last
evening was one of the most successful
yet given by the club. : The musio fur
nished was of the highest class, and all
present spent a most enjoyable evening.
ORANGE HALL ITEMS .
The literary Friday night was unusually
interesting.
Question, "Resolved , that civilized
nations should interfere with the treat
ment of the Russian Jews." It was ably
discussed in favor of the affirmative.
The literary program was also excellent
Tne basket social that followed was a
success in every way. Auctioneer
Stringham succeeded in forcing the eales
up until $58 dollars was the amount on
the table. To add to the evening'e enter
tainment, President W. T, Stein furnished
a number of sele ctions from hie phono
graph.
I feel that these items would not t
complete without refer, ing to the most
excellent -Thanksgiving exercises last
Friday evening by the school under the
skillful management of Miss Broggs who
has proved herself a moet excellent teach
er, the evidence of which was ehown by
the quality of her work. ,
1 A DESERVED PROMOTION
From -a. Tacoma paper we learn that
"Toots" Kirkpatrick, who is well known
and ha many friends in this community,
and who has for the past five years held
a position in the office of Northen Prcific
at Tacoma, - has received a well earned
promotion of several degrees, ' and his
many friends here send him their hearty
congratulatione and best wishes upon his
good fortune. .
A BENEFIT TO LA GRANDE
r . Ueibel returned from buying spring
goods from the main trade center of the
world for The Fair, including many ex
ceptional values in new and seasonable
goods which will be offered to the'r trade
as they arrive. Indications are that
merchandise will be higher in the. spring
which they have anticipated by buying
early. ' '
A RARE SIGHT
Any person wishing to see a fine flock
of fowls, should not fail to see those
truly beautiful white Plymouth Rock
thoroughbreds of Jap Stevens'. They are
of the purest breed and are from one of
the best poultry yards in the east; and
their snow white plumage and bright red
C3mbs is a sight that would - cheer the
heart of any lover of fine fowls.
A NATIONAL THEATRE
A national theatre is to be established
at New York. Wealthy men have com
bined in raising afund of $3,000,000 to
found euch an institution. Heinrich Con
ried, director of grand opera at the me
tropolitan opera house. New York, will
have charge of it. The block between
Sixty-second and Sixty-third street on
Central park has been bought for a site
and the threatre itself will cost $2,000,-
000. It is proposed to produce the best
in drama ana opera ana to encourage
American playwrights and composers
througn tne national theatre as far as
possible. The immense foyer of ' the
theatre will be made a valuable art gall
ery. The moral tone and educational
value of the theatre in this country should
be raised to a much higher level : through
the influence of the institution- proposed

The Zeek saw mill was sold this week
to a syndicate of mill men who will take
immediate control. A company will be
formed - and ' capitalized, at $100,000.
big lumber business will be carried on
and in all probability another mill erected
in trie spring. There are several town
ships of good lumber to be cut off In the
neighborhood of the mill besides a large
body of yellow pine fir, and tamarack
extending for miles to the. East and
North. The Incorporators are J. E. Fogg.
L. Jacobs, J, H. Lloyd and H. J. Lucas
It it rumored that Mr. Zeek has the
contract to place a large quantity of
logs in the mill yards during the winter.
This will surely add considerably to the
volume of business in the town of Union.

NO DRUGS TOR THE CHILDREN "
Dr. Alfred Hand, at a recent ' meeting
of the Pennsylvania State Medical Society
contrasted former methods of treating
children with those of today, declaring
that even in the case- of pneumonia no
drugs should be used, but, onlyth matter
of diet oburvad., OiteapahUts, thnugn
the correction of the structures, very
materially add to the hands that might
be had through the regulation of diet.

notable features of the advance of the
