AMERICAN SKIPS In "Thursday's Daily Observer, atten tion was called to the significant fact that of the 28 ships at and enroute from foreign countries to port in Portland Oregon, not one was an American owned ship. For the eight months ending with August 190S the total imports of foreign stuffs into the United States were valued at the ports of entry at S77Q.4 12,026 of which S341.822.835 worth of stuffs en tered without paying any tariff and $428, 689,1 91paid a duty or tariff. Of the total imports into the United States in the eight months ending with August 1905 amounting to $770,4 12, 026 worth, of which cars' and other land vehecles brought to the United States stuffs valued at $52,175,414 leaving $718,236,612 worth that came to us from foreign lands in ocean going ships. During the said period American steam ships brought ut $105,638,760 worth of imports' and American sailing vessels $6,251,249 worth, making a total value of the imports that reached us in that period on board of ships that floated the flag of the United States amounted to $111,889,999 which left $658,622,327 that came to us in foreign ships. These figures show that of the imports that reac'iei the ports of the United States for the eight months ending with Augus 1 905 in American owned ocean ships was less by $46,898,618 worth than one sixth of thp whole amount of our imports in ocean going ships. It is not a pleasant dilemma to contem plate to know that we are dependent upon foreign ships to Wing more than five sixths of the stuffs we purchase from abroad, but the condition of our exports gives little consolation, The total exports of farm products and domestic merchandise from the United States for the eight months ending with August 1905 was of the value of $947, 427.140 of' this $110,614,770 worth came in cars and other land vehicles, $32,046,984 in American steam vessels and . $5,673,350 worth in American sailing vessels, making a total of our foreign exports of farm products and domestic merchandise that was carried from us by our own ships of $87,620,- 334, and that $749,492,036 worth of our farm and homemade merchandise was carried from our ports during the eight months ending with August, 1905 to foreign markets in foreign owned ocaan going ships, of this $514,380,050 worth was under the English flag. Indoor base bill has never attracted much interest in this city. It is very popular in other portions of the state. Two feet of snow is ' reported at the summit at Kamela. This will remain until the warm winds of summer permit it to melt and swell the streams which insure good crops. We expect great things in this city in 1 906 and the way to start the ball roll ing is to make the annual convention of Northwestern Fruitgrowers Association, which meets in this city on January 3d., 4th. and 6th., a success. While we real ize that this is not La Grande's associa tion alone but a meeting that all parts of the county will take pleasure in making an unqualified success. However the details 'which will make it a success or not will fall upon La Grande, Don't let us overlook anything but what will per mit every visitor returning home with a feeling of delight that it was his good fortune to have been present I . ' Who wiUGovernor Chamberlain appoint as Senator Mitchell's successor? While we are not afraid but what there will be an abundance of candidates to fill all of . the places on the ticket It is quite evident that at the present time few have announced themselves in this county as compared with other sections of the state.
