Grande Brewery Will Install

Julius Roescrt, proprietor of the La
Grande Brewery, estimates that he con
sumes fully one-third of thi Union county
barley crop yearly. This season he pur
chased 1 0,000 bushels of the best brew
ing barley early in the season, paying
from 92, to 96 cents a hundred. He
was indeed, fortunate, as the price of the
poorest feed barley at this time has al
most reached that figure.
A few years back Mr. Roesch made a
specialty of shipping considerable malt
from this city to inland points as far east
as Salt Lake. - The grain markets of the
east have enabled the brewers of the
more eastern points, together with cheap
er freight rates,- to purchase from the
middle west. This had cut off part of the
market from the La Grande establish
ment, but to meet the . situation, Mr.
Roesch enlarged sufficiently to consume
the malt output at home.

Next season Mr. Koescn plans to msia
a cold storage and artificial ice plant and
also to extend his bottling works capacity
If sufficient cold storage room can be
contracted for among the merchants of
the City, he will extend his buildings to
fumish such facilities. Mr. Roesch will
not attempt to retail artificial ice but will
probably contract his output to some one
who wishes to retail it to the trade. As
this machinery will not be installed until
next season some time the natural ice
crop will be harvested this winter the
sams as heretofore!
The improvements contemplated by Mr.
Roesch will be ' a great addition to the
city's payroll and producing capacity. Mr.
Roesch has been identified with the city's
interest for many years aud he will un
doubted I v be suooortsd in his new im
provements by' the 'business men of the
community. ' ' ' . '
