Union M. E. Church
Dedicated Yestsrday
The new M. E. church at Union was
dedicated yesterday afternoon.' Ministers
from various .charges in the district were
present; and short addresses were de
livered ..by several. ' Th;main feature
God.
was the address by Bishop Moore who
said in part : '
BISHOP MOORE'S SERMON '
: "This is a faithful saying and worthy
of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came
into the world to save sinners; of whom I
am chief." 1 Timothy I 15
Men in their heart burdened and soul
distressed condition may call upon nature
for help and deliverance, but nature only
re-echoes the soul's distressed cry.
There is no help in nature for soul bond
age in sin. i
Men may look to philosoghy for deliver
ance from sin, but philosophers in all ages
have tried their skill in vain. They are
physicians of no value.
Even science with all its advocated
efficacy by learned men is too weak to
save men from sin.
Our own friends fail us In this es
tial and one thing needful. .' :
Now if nature, philosophy, science and
our own friends can not save us from our
sins. "To whom shall, we go?" To
Christ Jesus who burst into this world
with light' life and redemption. . What
vir4nra kv w of Chrit'a mmr to
save? " - " " ;'
Let us call upon Paul for his testimony.
Here 'it, is. "This is a faithful saying and
worthy of alt acceptation, that Christ
Jesus came into the world to save ' sin-
n"s." - , . ,
We will hear John's testimony. What
does John say? "In the beginning was
the word,' and the word was with Qod,
and the word was God. ' -

Memorial Exercises
YesUrday at two thirty the Elks of
this city held their annual memorial ex
ercises, at which time ceremonies in re
membrance of their dead wart held. Ad
dresses appropriate to the Occasion were
delivered and fitting .music rendered. The
principal address of the day was delivered
by Hon, C- A, Johns of Baker City.: ; ;
Reform Mayors ;
Cleveland, 0, Dec 4 Pursuant td,ths
call of Mayor Tom Johnson, the mayors-
elect of numerous Ohio cities, notably
those chosen on reform tickets, mat her
today to form a state association. The
primary purpose to plan a fight for
legislation that will be of benefit to the
cities. Mayor Dunn of Chicago and
Mayor Weaver of Philadelphia, have been
invited to address the meeting.
Who Docs 'The" Voting
How many kinds of people are not al-!
lowed to vote at state elections? Women
in all states except Colorado, Idaho, Utah
and Wyoming; . idiots and criminals in
most states; paupsrs in many states;
Chi.iesein Oregon. Nevada and California
Indians iq Mississippi, Montana and Ne
vada; Indians not taxed in Maine and
Washington, and in Minnesota when they
lack in ' customs of civilization." Missis
sippi and Idaho exclude bigamists; Flor
ida and Michigan bar duelists, and sev
eral states disqualify United States sol
diers and sailors. Wisconsin excludes
those who bet on elections, and this
clause ought to include the silly forms of
betting which entail riding in wheelbar
rows and letting the hair grow.

of the law for I had been dealt o roughly
with at their hands. But I looked up
into the face of the Judge and he stooped
and with his finger he wrote in the sand
and when he arose he said. "Which of
these condemn - thee?" I said, Tone"
And the Judge said "neither do 1 condemn
thee but go thy way and sin no more.
Then my heart broke and there came to
my life such a sweet change that 1 fell at
his feet and washed them with my ttars
and wiped them with the hair of my head.'
At three o'clock p. m. Rev. E M. Hill,
pastor of the M. E. church at Baker City,
preached from Isa, 4080, H." H.
Mower, pastor at La Gradde, preached
at 7:80 p. m.. from Gen. 89 , .
The church is a fine brick structure
and is a splendid monument to the energy
of the church membership and a lasting
tribute to tha energetic work of the
pastor, the Rev. J. H. Walker, upon whom
much of the work of building fell. The
church was dedicated free from all debt
and cost $4600.
