UNION THANKSGIVING
SERMON
"elivcrca By the Rtv. H. H. Mower of
Methodist Episcopal Church
There was a splendid attendance at the
Union praise service held yesterday fore
noon in the Methodist church. Naturally
it was largely composed of men, as the
Thanksgiving dinners were being prepared
by the ladies. The meeting was led by
Elder Gillilan who waa ably assisted by
ths pastors of the various churches. It
wa a free open meeting and the express
ions of thanks, voiced the prosperous con
d.t!on of this vicinity.
; THE EVENING SERVICE
Rev. H. H. Mower, pastor of the Meth
odist church delivered the sermon at the
Union menting which was held in the
Central church. This service was also
wall attended.
Rev. Mower took his text from Psalms
1 1 5 verse 1 2. ' "What shiil I render unto
tie Lord for all his benefits'r" he said in
p.rt. after reviewing the origin and history
of Thanksgiving Day from its inception
in 1607. - -v , , .
THE SPIRIT OP THE OCCASION
Thanksgiving should inspire our hearts
to the doing of better things for Gcd.
We have been mindful of ourselves and
provided as best we could for our recur-
' rr mora
than we gained and, perhaps were dis
posed to question the wisdom of our
Creator in permitting us to suffer loss,
never thinking that while in the pursuit
of wealth we forgot God. We did not say
What doth God care whether we succeed
or not? nor did we seek divine, guidance
but rushed madly after the coveted
prize, thinking our own skill and wisdom
would bring us success.
Let us take God into partnership.
countng ourselves simply a stewards
and co-workers together with God.
We In looking back over the passing
year, can say, "Truly the year ha been
crowned with goodness," the measure of
of which greatly varies, but the essence
of which fills our souls with gladness, be
it much or little. If we sow sparingly,
can w hope to reap a bountiful harvest
A spoonful of seed to the acre can not
bring large returns.
Are we careful to consider the times
and season when our work can best be
done, and do it with alacrity and delight?
With two things God is especially pleased
-earnestness and cheerfulness. "What
thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy
might" ' " '
Be diligent in business, fervent in spirit
erving the Lord witn gladness. Slight
nothing that God or man give you to do,
alway do your best Let gratitude swell
your heart and tune your lip to constant
praise. Count your blessing, distribute
aim, pour forth prayers, seize every op
portunity to be good and do good. Work
while the day last for the night cometh.
A good day' work should be followed by
a good night' rest so far a earthly toil
i concerned, but our work for God Car
rie with it the assurance, "A thy day I
so shall thy strength be." Let us not be
weary in well doing for In due season w
hall reap if we faint not "And who
can tell what the harvest shall be," "Eye
hath not seen." etc.' ' 4 : 5 " -
"Be thankful that we have a president
who has himself so much of the spirit of
Christianity. When two great nations
were in a life and ' death ; struggle one
for conquest the other for self preserva
tionour president with the Influence of
the g. vernmj-it behind him, challe re 1
these people to a consideration of terms
f peace. The challenge wae accepted,
further slaughter was averted, the armies
ere withdrawn and the results are
large y due to this blessed government of
w. c i we are a part '
We shouldte thankful for a broad mind
ed capable statesman at the head of the
government whose heroic stand againt
corruptions, trusts and monopolists and
in favor of the masses has been so mar
velously endorsed by the people. .."The
greed which would use our government
and some of its strong forces to serve it
self and enslave other meet a foe, who
is the champion of righteousness at every
turn, in the person of our president"
It is quite fitting to give thank as this
time following so closely the great vic
tory of Nov. 17 for civic righteousness,
especially noticable in Philadelahia and
throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Thank God for civic purity awakening,
for official integrity and for the enforce
ment of the law, as by Governor Folk,
of Missouri. While our people are len
ient and merciful, when they become
aroused to the fact that grafters and
thieves hold official positions for unholy
and corrupt ends, they arise in their
might cast out the monsters, put true
men in office and enthrone justice again,
God reigns, and the kingdom of right
eousness Is coming. A king in right
eousness snail reign le uod own prom
ise. Give thank for the light that God'

the
ginning of wisdom. The old gospel ha
not lost its power. It is settled forever
in heaven.
There is more reaj spirituality in tht
world today, more of an enthusiastic
spirit of practical, effective christian
work, more consciousness of our obliga
tion to give the gospel to the heather,
more personal interest in the general wel
fare of the world and the church than
ever before. Surely this ev'dencss the
drawing near of the complete evangeliza
tion of the world.
The time is rapidly approaching, when
war, slavery, intemperance, licentious
ness, profanity and every false way thai'
cease; "for the mouth of the Lord hath
spoken it" The whole earth shall be filled
with the glory of the Lord. , When the
Lord's house shall be established in t u
top of the mountain and shall be exalted
above the hills and all nations shall flow
unto it When the wolf shall dwell with
the lamb and the leopard shall lie dow.
with the kid, and the calf and the youn;
lion fatling together and a littlechild shal:
lead them, and the cow and the boat
shall feed, the young ones shall lie down
together and the lion ehall eat hay lik.
an ox, and the sucking child play on the
shall put its hand in the cockatrice' den.
They shall not hunt nor destroy in all
the holy mountain, for the earth shall be
full of the knowledge of the Lord; when
the notes of war shall give way for songs
of praise; when a redeemed and ransoms
ed world shall send up a universal "Al
leluea," "The Lord God omnipotent reign
eth." "Give unto the Lord the glory and
his name." ' "' V-
