The Dalles. Or, Nov. 20. Charles
Jones was killed instantly by Policemin
Ralph Gibons at 9 o'clock last nig it
while resisting arrest for stealinif flour at
the Diamond Flour Mills. He leaves a
wife and several children in destitute cir
cumstances. For several years the manager of the
Diamond Mills has known someone was
stealing flour from the mill, and three
weeks ago put the case in the hands of
officers. Last night Gibons learned that
Jones had been seen on a back street go
ing toward the mills, and he hastened to
a place of hiding in the rear of the flour
house.
Scarcely had he secreted himself when
he heard someone pass through a narrow
alley between the mill building and a
feed yard, then enter the flour room
through a rear door. Soon Jones came
out and when within few feet' of where
Gibons was secreted the officer threw a
flashlight on him and commanded him to
throw up his hands. Jones obeyed, and
Gibons. holding his dark lantern and
pistol In his right hand, proceeded to
search his prisoner for weapons, as Jones
was known to go armed. "

As the officer was searching him, Jcnes
seized Gibon's pistol and tried to turn it
on the officer. . , . ,
A fierce struggle ensued, Gibons all the
while trying to keep the gun pointed
toward Jones and pulling the trigger
whenever the pistol pointed toward his
antagonist Two balls took effect in
Jones' body, one in the breast passing
through his heart, and the other in his
hip. ...
. At an Inquest before Coroner Burget
this forenoon the verdict was justifiable
homicide. Jones was about 40 years of
age. '
DISTRIBUTION OF

The annual distribution of vegetable
and flower seeds by the department of
agriculture will begin December 1, and
before planting time it is expected the
entire amount (about 38,000.000 pack
ages) will be in the hands of the people
Congress for the past several years has
appropriated $290,000 for this purpose,
but a portion of this is used for foreign
experiment work and other kindred mat
ters. The bulk of 33,000,000 packages
Is subject to the order of senators and
representativss for distribution among
their constituents, the secretary of agri
culture reserving one fifth of the'amount
to supply the statistical crops correspond
ents, the weather bureau, and for other
purposes.
In addition to vegetable ' and flower
seeds the department sends out quantities
of cotton, forage and field seeds to local
ities they are best suited for and from
which it is thought good results -may be
obtained.

parties are hurrying surveys for their re
spective -companies through the Teton
mountains, the Jackson Hole country and
on to Idaho. One outfit is in the emnlnv
of the Burlington company and is survey
ing for the extension of the Alliance
Guersney line, work on which is to be
resumed at uuemsey In the near future,
according to the official announcement of
General Manager G. W. Holdredge. The
other corps ia working for the' Chicago 4
Northwestern and is surveying for the
extension of the Northwestern L.annAr
Lander line from Lander through the
mountains to a connection with the Ore
gon Short Line at some point in Idaho.
The Northwestern survey follows Hog
back creek and Snake river. . The sur
veyors at times are camped and work
so close together that thev -eichanoa
courtesies, although they will not talk
aooui their plans.

received here that an Entrlish officer in
Hindoos tan has discovered that many
ancient temples in out-of-the-way places
were connected wirh each other by me
tallic wires and kind of telephone.
Through archaeological investigations the
same officer hae discovered that oraetlcal
telephone communication somewhat like
that of the present day was known to
the inhabitants of India more than 2,000
years ago.

says:
The production of sold in thallniuH
States during 1904 amounted to 5.910,-
fine ounces valued at $80,655,646.
This represents an increase of $7,243,
984 over the production of 1903. The
largest previous output, in 1902. amount
ed cj $'-"1 000.000. The production of
Ww in 1904 amounted to 65.999,864
fine ounces valued at $32,035,278. This
represents an increase of 1,699,864
ounces over the production of 1 903 and
an increase in value of $2,713,378. The
record ourput of silver in 1892, amount
ing to 63.500.000 fine ounces, the report
says, has not been reached in late years,
nor has the commercial value attained
tho figures of that year, which amounted
to $82,101,000.
