RIGHTS OP WOMEN
"While Europe's eye is fixed on mighty
things.
The fate of empires and fall of kings:
Quacks of state must each produce his
plan.
And even children lisp the rights of man:
One sacred right, just let me mention.
The rights of women merit some atten-
linn" Rnaawv Rmn
It has been a long time since the great
Scotch bard wrote the above, and all
these yeari about 220, the women have
patiently waited for the attention due
their rights by the men. Growing some
what anxious and thinking that a little
urging on their part will hasten the day
when the chivalry and sense of justice of
the men of Oregon ; will induce them to
recognize the rights of women to a voice
in making the laws they and their child
ren have to obey, and to carry out which
they pay taxes on their property, at"the
next June election they will ask the men
of Oregon to give them the right to vote.
To present their claim to be treated as
equals to the men of Oregon the women
who met in a national convention in Port-
.and on last Wednesday planned an active
iimpaign in Oregon next spring and
maoe arrangmente to have the state
thoroughly canvassed.
From the Oregon Journal's account of
the meeting the following is taken
"The women ' decided to organize the
state fully for the campaign by which
they hope to win equal suffrage. To this
nd the national organization will send
some of its most conspicuous speakers
to Uregon. Miss Gregg, Miss Clay and
Miss Lavghlin already are here. They
will be joined by Mies' Ida Porter Boyer of
Pennsylvania, who will conduct a press
bureau; Mrs Clara B. Colby, editor of the
Woman s Tribune;, Mrs Julia Woodworth
jf Oklahoma, Mise Harriet May Mills of
New York and, finally, Rev. Anna Shaw.
who will arrive shortly after the close of
the national coevention in Washington

committee is being selected to carry on

It has been suggested that the citizens
purchase the exhibit hall from its present
owner and make it a town institution
We believe that this suggestion is a good
one. provided that the hall can be secured
at a proper figure. We believe that the
city would derive a greater amount of
benefit from the exhibit if it were under
the direction of the La Grande Com
mercial Club than under the present con
ditions. We-do not mean by this to cast
any reflection upon the present owner
but we are of the opinion that such an
enterprise can best be maintained and
the bestnresulta obtained by system
whereby the general public can and will
assist We feel certain that if the La
Grande Commercial Club will make an
attempt to secure control of this exhibit
hall the citizens of this city will come to
its aid in the way of finance, and the
farmers and fruit growers can be depend
ed upon to bring in their very best products.
The fine November weather is hitmlv
satisfactory to every one concerned.
is especially acceptible to the
growert as there is yet a portion of
crop unharvested. In every branch
life the citizens are preparing for winter
and the leading question is whether
winter will be an open one or not

'Death was fast approaching." writes
Ralph F. Fernandez, of Tampa. Fla. de
scribing his fearful race with death, "as
a result of liver trouble and heart dis
ease, which bad robbed me of sleep and
of all interest in life. I had tried many dif

got no benefit until I began to use Elec
