THAT 5H0RT TERM The request of the authorities of the Oregon Agricultural College at Corvallis. that as many of the farmers in Oregon as can attend the short courses in general farming, dairying, fruit growing and on other branches of farming, presents an opportunity that our farmers, young and jld, will do well to avail themselves of. Ther will be no charge for entrance or MUWtM tVV. . ...... .....v. The Observe has a strong desire thai this county hav a goodly number of farmers go down from this county, for it believe that the more our fanner know it the thing they can learn at that tchool. the better it will be for them and the whole county. Tho successful farmer, in this ag. is not the man with the mos xawn and best trained muscles, but tht tun of the meet brain and best equippec nind, and it is successful farmers that nak successful counties, state and lations. , , . ":" ; All sciences contribute to and arc helpmates of the farmer, if he will on'y put himself in a condition to benefit b) them. Ther were 85.83? farm ir Oregon in 1 900 and if the number of .'arms hav increased at the sam rate from 1 900 a the per cant of increase tra from 1890 ther ar now 41.18C farm in this stats. As a business pro position each on of ' these farm should be an experiment station to find out how to make that farm produce more than ir. th past Suppose by the experiments tht aggrogaU of th farm produce per rear wr fecraased but ten cents per acre on 1 900 wer 6,743.020 acre ' and is pro- jably not loss now, the gain to tm vaalth of the sUle would b $674,301 annually a sum so larg that it staggers th imagination. Th object of th Agricultural' Coueg at Corvallis is to assist th farmers in rendering their farms more productive) but it can do this far mora efficiently if t farmers will themselves go ther and get th advantage of what, not only the th professor of that institution hen been doing, but what th tVnkers and experimenters along agricultural Enes an joing a9 over th civQued world. Thos who attend these short course will thus l BiM with th workf best an most practical thinker. - Th farmer of Oregon ar th manager of a vast estate, covered 5.743 023 acre valued in 1900 at $132,337,514 for land improveanento and building thereon. The farm' im plement and machinery on the 35.837 farm k Oregon in 1900 war valued at $6,506,725. and th iv stock thereon was valued at $33,917,043, making the total value of all farm property reach $172.761 Jt87. Th owner and holders of tha inagninoant and productive pro perty on which $33,090,969 worth of stuffs wer grown in 1 900 can 9 aiford to negfect any offer that premises to assist them in rendering their hok&v more vaXjahi and productv. In tha so appear a cal to th fnxtgroww, relativ to th friat grow- mn' oavntioa which wdl be held here tamtanm during th month ef December. Th call a issaed by C D, HuSman. eoratary asaooation. and shouid reociv rospectfui attenlwa at th hands of a3 fruct giow a the vaBey. Uni cconty. thnmfh this convention vrifl hav aa opportuaity to pi met Its fruit vatae to a class of men who hav practical kaowMg of th froift business, and w .hcU tea aothang ondon whkh wdl in any way bring our snaay advantages as a fruit producing section to the atten tion of the world. We should remember that this is not a convention of local fruit men. but is a convention consisting of delegates 'from six states.. Not only will the entire state of Oregon be represented, but delegates will be here from Washing ton. Idaho, Montana, UUh and California. We can not afford to allow these repre sentative men to come here and find us unprepared to show them the very best that this valley can produce. This valley produces fruit the equal of any to be found anywhere, and it is our duty to have a representative display ready to exhibit before this convention. This dis play should not contain simply a few large apples and a gigantic excuse for not having more, but we must impress our guests with the fact that this county produces fruit ' in quantities. Therefore we must have an exhibit which will com mand respect by its size as well as by it quality. This is not simply a La Grand entertainment, but a convention in which the fruit men of six states will participate, and in which the entire county is especially interested. Healthy, happy babies.
