MOUTH OF TrtE COLUMBIA
The people of Oregon, are very much
worried-lest the coming congress will not
make a liberal appropriation to continue
the operations that the United States
has been carrying "on to deepen the
channel through the bar that stretches
across the mouth of the Columbia river,
and the river channel from there to
Portland so that ocean going ships of the
largest size, can enter the river and pass
up to Portland and return with safety.
The United States has already expended
" -tit:- H rtwm .v.:.
project, but it is estimated that it will
take several millions more to complete
the job. ,
Two very ugly facts confront our
peop'e in this dilemma. The most potential
one is the fact that recently our national
expenditures have exceeded the recei pts.
and there is a growing defict in the U. S
treasury. The minor fact that, though a
very unpleasant one for Oregonians to
contemplate, is, that practically, Oregon
has but one representative in congress.
It is thought, or at least claimed, by
some that if we had a full delegation in
congress, by their united efforts, they
would stand much better chance to induce
congress to economize somewhere else
than in Oregon to stop, the growing deficit
This may be true, but even a full delega
tion under existing conditions. would" have
to answer, in all probability, some very
pointed questions; put by economically
inclined congressmen. ' Suppose some
statistically inclined member should call
attention to the very liberal appropriation
of public land to Oregon for schools,
colleges, and wagon roads and then ask
our members. "What have you done with
all these millions of acres of land? What
have you to show for the munificent
donations the U. S. has heretofore made
to Oregon? - .
And while our representatives were
scratching their heads for an answer,
the inquisitant figurer would come again
with the assertion, backed by a dismal
array of figures and say. "1 find that a
dollar appropriated to do anything for the
betterment of Oregon accomplishes less
than almost anywhere else. It is like
pouring water down a rat hole to make
appropriations for 'Oregon. Your people
are too liberal spenders of Uncle Sam's
money." '
New York, the d.str.ct attorney who has
been laboring to clean up that city
seems to be a winner and Pa'rtrige o7
San Francisco gives hopes of overcoming
Schmitz, that king of grafters. Riht
will prevail. The people of the United
States are having a taste of clean govern
ment and and will in the future demand
clean government in every locality.

Perhaps the reasons for the low grades
received by the students in the public
schools at the tests a few days ago, are
that at a certain age almost every boy.
and some girls, conceive the idea that
they are in possession of sufficient learn
ing to guide them through the narrow
pathways of life. Fathers, mother's and
teachers-learning pales before that poss
essed by the average boy of from IS and
up a few years. That is the reason why
the world w so filled with, failures. It is
a lamentable fact that a boy seldom
realizes the great necessity' of education
until he has lea school and' enters the
different walks of life. Then he can look
back over his boyhood days, realize the
great amount of wasted time in school-
How much easier life would be if he had
utilized his time in study instead of
flipping paper wads and idling his time in
looking out of the window. Some pro
vision should have been made to enable
the young student to look ahead into bis
coming tfe and enable him to realize the
advantage of making the best of , his
opportunities.
Today is election day m almost every
city of any consequence m the United
States. The question at stake in almost
every one is whether or not graft shall
