MONDAY. NOVEMBER 6. - 1906
It is beginning to dawn upon the people
of this county that the forest reserves
are of no benefit except to a few forest
rangers. The Chesnimus reserve is an
absolute detriment and steps should be
taken to have it annulled as a reserve
and thrown open to settlement Ledger
Democrat. -
The Wallowa Democrat and Lostine
Ledger have consolidated and will be
-,.wh.i..4 m I iiaHna tinder the name ot
the Ledger-Democrat. J. A. and J. F.
Burleigh are the proprietors and as both
are experienced newspaper men there is
no reason why they should not make their
new venture a success. Wallowa county
is developing rapidly and as they have
been identified with the country for many
years are conversant with the field. We
wish them success.
The Promoter, a new weekly publication
has just appeared in Pendleton under the
editorship of H. C. Willis who has had
many years experience in journalism in
Umatilla county. The first issue of the
Promoter shows energy and is certainly
characteristic of its name. There is a
wide field in this great Northwest for
aggressive promoters of the highest type.
Tomorrow the elections in various states
take place. The public seem to be more
interested in the municipal contests in San
Francisco and New York, particularly in
the latter, Mr Hearst is making a whirl
wind campaign and he certainly has the
old timer' politicians guessing. He cer
tainly has the interests of the masses on
his side, but the Tammany machine is
usually successful.
Until the 0. R. &. N. company builds
closed sewer from the shops to the
river or to a point where the sewerage
can be discharged at a place of safety.
just so long will the north end of the city
be threatened with disease. Typhoid,
scarlet fever and diphtheria are diseases
bred in such filth and the children of the
city are the ones to suffer- Let soma
action be taken to persuade the railroad
company to build this sewer and safe
guard the community of that section of
the city.
. . -? , ...j
Our attention has been called to
transient picture frame man who .has
been working the town. This man buys
his frames from a local dealer for say a
dollar apiece and then retails them out to
the people of the city for $2.60 and $3.00
each. Itis false economy to'believe that
soma outsider can come in and sell goods
cheaper than the man who is on the
ground with a stock. Keep yoar money
at home and you will have a chance to
get some of it back but patronize outside
Arms and the chances are that it will
never get back. "
Current tradition credits the ancients
with many "lost arts". It is still common
to hear people say that means unknown
to us must have been employed to erect
the pyramids, that the Damascus blade
t beyond the power of modern cutlers.
and that the art of hardening copper died
with some little brown Aztec In point cf
fact, larger stones than any found in the
pyramids have been quarried in Maine,
carried across the sea, vid erected in
buildings in England and France. If any
one cared to pay for the cost, there are
plenty of contractors who would build
replica of the largest pyramid, and not
take so very long about it It is doubtful
if a "Damascus blade" will stand as much
as a good modern band-saw or the spring
of a cheap clock. Copper can be harden
ed by modern methods to equal any
specimen that hat been left to us by the
incienU. Many arts that are supposed
to be lost are simply abandoned because
there is no modern need of cultivating
them, and others are not even abandoned,
but are employed every day and im
proved upon. Youths' Companion.

Cleared For Action
When the body is cleared and ready
for action, by Dr. King's New Life Pills,
you can tell it by the bloom of health on
the cheeks; the brightness of the eyes;
the firmness of the flesh and muscles;
the buoyancy of the mind. ' Try them, at
Newlin Drug Store, 25 cents.
