DEPENDENT ON FOREIGN
SHIPS
The Oregouian of Oct SO gives
a list of 36ships now enroute
over seas for the port of Port
land, that have a carrying capa
city in the aggregate of 65,032
tons of giaiu. There were on
that date 12 ocean goipg chips
anchored at Portland, loading
or preparing to load for foreign
countries, having a net tonnuge
for grain that will enable them
to take 25,641' tons. Not one of
these 43 ships are American, or
carry the flag of the Uuited
States, end when loaded they
will bear to various foreign
ports 90,673 tons of American
goods under foreign flags. Tne
flag of old England floats over
28 of these 43 ships, that ol
Prance over 16 and the flag of
Russia over 1 and the German
flag over 3.
The foregoing statement
shows how absolutely dependent,
we of the Pacific stales, are upon
foreign ships to carry to market
the surplus product of our farms,
factories, forests, flocks and
herds, mid startles a shudder at
what would be our condition
"hould any great war between
the nations whose seamen and
ships are taking our produce to
market, occur. As neutrals we
could trade with either of the
warring nations, providing we
had ships of our own to carry
our produce under our own flag,
but would not be permitted to
do so under an enemies flag to
the po-t of consignment.
If England acid Prance should
begin war on each other to
morrow neither, the 23 ships
bearing the English flag nor the
16 under the French flag could,
or most probably would not
load it Portland and take chances
ol being captured on the high
seas, enroute to their home ports
or to neutral ports.
The whole of our foreign trade
as a nation is in nearly as bad s
predicament as the Pacific
states. For the year ending
with June 1905 all the shipping
sea ports iu the United States
received 30,983.217 tons ol
foreign goods of which but 7,
080,624 tons came to us in
Armeican ships or not one
fourth of our imports.
For the year ending with Juni
1905 there left our seaports foi
