TO THEATRE GOERS
There are a few words that tbe
Observer desires to say in regard
to several practices to which the
theatre goers . of this r-ity are
addicted. The first, and which
is the greater evil, we wish to
say that the behavior of the
"gallery gods" is most disgrace
ful. For instance on Wednes
day at the performance of Queen
Esther, when, a number of the
most respected ladies of La
Grande attended the theatre
and sat in the gallery, a hood
lum who was also there smoked
a cigarette between one of the
acts. Others rolled their ciga
rettes, and, not daring to smoke
them, had them ready to light
as soon as they were in the hall.
It seems almost incredible that
a human being cannot resti sin
himself long enough to be
gentlemanly during a short
theatrical performance even if
he cannot be during the remain
der of the time. Another prac
tice of the gallery attendants is
that of lining the railing in
front with their feet. Feet are
made to walk upon and not
display to the players on the
stage. Perhaps if tbe hats were
tiken off as in any other public
hall the manners wouli he im
proved upon.
So much for the gnlleiy. Jf
you ever have noticed that just
before the curtain is rung down
on the closing scene, many of
the people in the dress circle
oommence to don their wiaps.
Besides creating a great deal of
confusion the view of those who
are so unfortunate as to be be
hind them, is cut off and they
mnst mias the closing scene.
The management of the opera
house never has closed the doors
until the audience is ell out
and it is not probable that he
will until all are out. So don't
hurry so. .
Another fault, which is not so
glaring, is the lack of apprecia
tion in a La Grande audience.
An actor can play better if he
thinks tho people appreciate his
efforts and how can he tell
whether he is appreciated or
not if an audience sits dumb
without applause at his efforts.
Warm up. It costs nothing to
clap your bands if you line the
play and if you don't, why, just
throw a turnip at the actor.
There could not be a more
attractive line of enlertaiumeuts
otiered to the ainueenmit lovirg
public of 'La Grande than tbe
list planned by the lecture
association. The price of ad
mission will be but 30 cents t
those who buy a season ticket
and as mauy of the entertaiu-
cuents will be worth 50 cents and
a dollar each, the ccurse is a
bargain.
The welcome that Prebideut
Roosevelt is receiving in the
"solid South" shoes how a truly
great man is appreciated. Per
haps there is not a more popular
man in the world tban Theodore
Roosevelt. He has gained his
popularity by his honesty and
integrity aud because be is jus'
a plain American ci'iien.
Money did not make . him great
but hard work and study, coapled
wilh brains made bim what he
is.

But not Cheap Meat
Having purchased the Bock
