POLITICAL RANCHOR
One of the maiij hopeful
signs of the present time in the
United States is the apparently
gradual dimination of political
rancor and . malicious . bitter
ness. The older generation re
calls the acrimony that charac
terized political .discussions in
the days of their youth. The
Democrats sang wlib great glee
and unctions at their clubs,
mass meetings and brbacues,
"Mr Clay don't you kuow for
your many crimes, you ought
to have been hanged a thousand
times?" And instead of Mr Clay
answering this question the
songecler by the chorus made
this as his profile. "He huugs
his head, his mouth wide open.
Like the gourd we keep soft soap
In." ; . . '. .
, Clay was a leader of the Whig
party that succeeded I lie old
Federalist Alexander Hamil
ton, the first U S Secretary of
Treasury, under Washington
was denounced by the Demo
cracy as being the heart , aud
braiu of the Federalists, and no
public man in the United States
was ever so maliciously and
falsely abu&ed as was Alerander
Hamilton, during his life time
aud for many years after he had
been killed iu a duel by a po
litical opponent'. The Federal
ists wore charged by the Demo
crats with being opposed to the
ft erdom of the masses and de
sirous ot returning to kingly
rule. There are men yet livinz
who have heard Hamilton de
nounced as an arch conspirator
against the rights of man and
the fteedom of the people, and
many to this day believe it.
Because these false accusations
and their prejudices were so
deeply inground that they
would neither listen to nor lead
anythiug that did not accord
with and fatten the hatred they
had for Hamilton, and the old
Federalist party.
Hamilton loBt his life in 1804
a few years after the Susl de
feat and death of the Federalist
party and the asension to power
of the Democratic purty, which
practically hela sway until lbCO.
Be I ore his death aud forty years
before the passag'e of the Pre
emption law, and more than sua
ty years before the Homestead
law was passed by the Republi
cans, Hamilton wrote: "The
free holder is the natural sup
porter ef good government, and
it should be the policy of Re
publics to multiply their free
holdeis, as it is the policy of
monarchies to multiply tenants.
We are a republio and we wish
to continue so; then multiply
the class of freeholders; pass the
publio lands easily and cheaply
into the bands of the people;
sell for a reasonable price to
those who are able to pay, and
give without price to those who
bi e not. I say give without
ice to those who are not able
sad that "which is so
consider sold for the
best price; for a price far above
gold and silver; a price which
eannotbe earned away ty de
linquent officers, nor lost in
failipg banks, not stolen by
thieves, nor squandered by an
improvident and extravagant
administration. It brings a
price above rubies a i ace of
virtuous and independent farm
ers, the true supnorters of their
country,' and the stock from
which its best defendeis must
be drawn." . ?
While the party that slander
ed Hamilton was in power it
gave not an acre of land to the
actual aettler; it fought the Pre
emption law for thirty years,
add the. Homestoad for sixty,
but never- ceased to slander
Hamilton as an imperialist and
autocrat and friend of oligar-
chists. . ;.
Plowing is the order of the
day in this valley. The farmers
war inat waitina- for a rain and
they are now busy seeding. :
